Character: Ovan
Series/Fandom: .hack//G.U.
Original or Template version: Original
Marked: Yes; with a crown
Residence: Noble Street, Torse House, Laundry Cove
Age: 26 years old
Gender: male
Species: human
Sexuality: Ovan leans towards being asexual as he generally shows no real interest in either gender. However, he does form strong friendships and bonds with people.
Appearance: His most easily identified aspect is the blue-tones that he dresses in. He’s a rather tall man, standing at 6’8”, and has short, blue hair. He also wears a long, flowing blue scarf and white pants that end in rather elaborate blue and white cuffs. His pants are accentuated by leather straps. He wears blue and white shoes His signature piece is the round, orange sunglasses that he always wears. On his left arm he wears a huge cylinder that is sealed with a lock.
Personality: A rather mysterious person, Ovan is one who prefers to stay quiet. When he speaks, however, everyone tends to listen. He’s a charismatic enough person and can generally command attention when he wants to without much effort at all. Ovan seems to be rather knowledgeable about the World R2 but because he rarely speaks it’s somewhat doubtful about what he truly knows. He’s friendly enough and is a rather polite person. He also tends to disappear for long periods of time only to mysteriously show back up again without warning. Ovan also seems to have several long-term goals but he never lets on to what they may be. While he will never lie to anyone, he also doesn’t exactly give a straight answer. Instead, he will give a vague enough answer that the interpretation is left up to the individual.
Abilities/Strengths: Ovan’s class/job is a steam gunner, meaning that he specializes more in the area of long-range attacks. His gun can be used as a melee weapon as well, making him a formidable enough foe during close-quarters encounters. As well, he’s an epitaph user and can summon the powerful Corbenik and can unleash a variety of powerful attacks. Only fellow epitaph users can see Corbenik and only another avatar is powerful enough to defeat him.
Weaknesses: As mentioned above, his class better at the long-range attacks, making him less effective when it comes to close-quarter combat. As well, he lacks the “special types” that other classes have, such as rapid attacks.
History: In the beginning, Ovan is the Guildmaster of The Twilight Brigade and, along with his guild, is in search of the Key of the Twilight. He is the one who rescues Haseo after he’s PKed and takes him under his wing. Unfortunately, his interest in Haseo caught the attention of Naobi, the leader of the TaN Guild. This starts a war between the two Guilds.
When Haseo finally makes a discovery about where the Key of Twilight is hiding, Ovan is captured by Naobi, who had used the entire thing as a trap. Ovan had been expecting something like that and in the meantime had been gathering information about the illegal activities of TaN. After he disappeared, Shino sent this information to the SysAdmins who disbanded TaN. Even though the guild was disbanded, it didn’t really matter as Naobi and his assistant, Ender, were really the SysAdmins Yata and Pi. They had been interested in Ovan due to his character data being larger than what a normal PC’s should be. With him captured, they were free to scan over his character to try and figure it out. Eventually they broke the seal on his arm and during the flash of light that occurred because of it, he was able to escape and return back to the World.
When he had returned, his guild had disbanded and the only remaining members were Haseo and Tabby. During his disappearance, Shino had been attacked by Tri-Edge and killed, being turned into a Lost One. He decided to wander the system, choosing to ignore contact with former friends and allies. While he wandered, he was trailed by Azure Kite. When Azure Kite attacked him at Briona Gwydion the Dragonbein Range, he used his left arm to fight with Azure Kite, forcing the powerful character to retreat. It turned out that Ovan’s left arm contained an AIDA. Ovan knew that Azure Kite had only been driven off and that he would eventually return.
Eventually, Haseo became known as a powerful PKKer known as “The Terror of Death.” Out of nowhere, Ovan called him to the Arche Koeln Waterfall and told him that Tri-Edge would appear in the Hulle Granz Cathedral soon. He hinted that defeating Tri-Edge might bring Shino back. Because it was Ovan that had given him the information, Haseo went to the Cathedral and as Ovan had said and that was where he informed Haseo of Shino’s state in the real world. After Ovan leaves, Azure Kite appears. While Haseo was engaged in battle with Kite, Ovan contacted Phyllo and met him at the Falls and told him the truth about Tri-Edge and how it was he, himself, who was the one responsible for Shino’s coma. Eventually Haseo ends up losing the fight and he is data drained. The last thing he saw before losing consciousness was Ovan approaching him.
Later on, Ovan again shows back up when Haseo is fighting in the arena. He watches this fight and sees Haseo unleash Skeith for the first time. He then meets up with Atoli and mentions how she resembles Shino, leading her to believe that Haseo may just be using her because of her resemblance to Shino and then instructs her to investigate the sign at Morrigu Barrow Wall. As well, he is the one who shared the information about AIDA with Sakaki. He gave items containing AIDA to Sakaki so that Sakaki could infect other players.
Haseo, Pi, and Atoli eventually confront Sakaki and once he is defeated Ovan shows up and gives Haseo Azure Kite’s severed arm. It is during this time that Ovan unlocks the seal on his arm and revelas the demonic-looking arm that was hidden beneath. He kills Atoli and Pi and then uses his bayonet along with the AIDA-infested arm to create the Sign. It is in that moment that it’s revealed that he is Tri-Edge. Ovan instructs Haseo to meet him at Backtop City Megin Fi and then disappears again.
When Haseo arrives at Megin Fi, Ovan is there waiting for him. The two engage in a battle and during the course of the battle, Ovan summons Corbenik and Haseo summons Skeith. Eventually, Ovan is defeated when Haseo uses a Data Drain on him.
That’s not the end of the story, however, as later, Haseo is seen with Atoli at the Cathedral. Atoli suddenly wore a shocked expression and when Haseo turned around, Ovan is standing there. Ovan tells him to “become strong enough to destroy me!,” then disappears off again. Haseo eventually meets with Ovan again in The Creator’s Room, and the two once more battle. It is during this battle that it is revealed that Corbenik is virtually wholly consumed by AIDA. Haseo eventually wins again and once more Data Drains Corbenik. After this happens, Ovan unleashes Corbenik’s special ability, the power of “Rebirth.” The key to unleashing this was to be defeated by Skeith. He uses the Rebirth to reset the internet and cleanses it of AIDA. The resulting shockwave shatters his PC and he falls into the Sea of Data. However, despite being defeated, his consciousness still continues to aid Haseo during the battle against Cubia.
He is seen once more after this, after the completion of the Forest of Pain event, when he briefly appears to Haseo.
