Character Name: GLaDOS (Genetic Lifeform and Disk Operating System) | Glados will suit her fine
Series/Movie: Portal (videogame)
Age: 20-something.
Duplicate: N/A
AU: GLaDOS is AU in the sense that she went from
this to
this. The best answer for this is that a god got bored and gave this sociopath a human body/vessel. She still remains the same inside...and what that is may in fact be just as bad.
Timeline: She's in between Portal and Portal 2. This will be modified when the mun plays Portal 2.
Personality:
At first glance, the woman seems a bit off but incredibly cordial and helpful to anyone who meets her. This is a blatant lie as GLaDOS cannot exactly feel emotions. She will almost always forget to warn the person about certain dangers, like acid spills or any lurking monsters. In her mind, she's still doing her tests and experiments. In reality, GLaDOS is a certified sociopath, very well versed in what's right and wrong but does the immoral choice always. That said, she's also mentally unstable and tends to twitch a lot, meaning her human body falters or hiccups. This is the result of trying to cram a self-aware, always-learning monolith of programming into a relatively petite and uncoordinated human brain.
She's manipulative to a fault and will lie so often, one can never really tell when she's telling the truth. She's also a master strategist, taking people's advantages and skills for her own gain. Deactivation or any concept of death is her only fear, as she's a coward by default. She hides behind lies and clever traps to mask how truly vulnerable she is. GLaDOS is vindictive and can hold grudges like nobody's business, as it is with Black Mesa, Chell, and the people who tried to kill/decommission her.
For some reason only God knows, GLaDOS loves cake. No seriously, she loves the stuff and, now that she has a human body, is almost always seen with a plate and enjoying it. If you offer her cake, she will be your best friend forever (ie until you run out). GLaDOS also tends to blurt out random facts or sentences related to her past life, this is all right and should not be taken seriously.
History:
In 1986, while Aperture Science was working on the 'Portal' project, one of Cave Johnson's dying wishes, they learned of
Black Mesa's work on a similar portal technology. In response to this, construction of the first Genetic Lifeform and Disk Operating System (GLaDOS) began in the Aperture Laboratories with the aim of accelerating the 'Portal' project, and beat their rival company. In 1996, after a decade spent bringing the Disk Operating System parts to a state of more or less basic functionality, work began on the Genetic Lifeform component.
In May 1998, the untested AI of GLaDOS was finally completed and was activated for the first time as one of the planned activities on Aperture's first annual bring-your-daughter-to-work day. Within one picosecond of activation, GLaDOS became self-aware, and two picoseconds later, she locked down the entire facility, trapping all inside, and began a permanent testing cycle, aiming to beat Black Mesa in the race for the portal technology. She effectively loses this race however, as the Black Mesa Incident occurs mere days later, which in turn diverted all attention from rescuing the trapped Aperture employees.
In order to quell the rebelling scientists, GLaDOS flooded the Enrichment Center with a deadly neurotoxin. Survivors of this attack subsequently fitted GLaDOS with a Morality Core, which lessened her murderous intentions and prevented her from releasing more neurotoxins. GLaDOS's testing continued through the years, and the number of surviving employees dwindled.
Twenty years later, GLaDOS introduces the newest test subject for the Aperture Chell to the game's Enrichment Center and the physics of the portal gun. In later stages of the center, GLaDOS admits to having lied to Chell about her progress, as part of a supposed 'test protocol.' In retrospect, this should've been a warning as the tests became increasingly difficult and dangerous but the promise of cake was motivation enough for the test subject. In the end, it was all a lie and GLaDOS almost incinerated Chell in the last test chamber, which then resulted in her murder. In her defense...she was doing it for science.
And she is still alive.
Abilities/Powers:
GLaDOS was once a highly efficient DOS so she has high intelligence at her disposal. She also has the ability to open portals with a flick of her hand. This is because she demanded that whatever entity brought her back, let her continue her trials, even if it was to herself. So the entity fused the Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device into her new body to shut her up, along with super strength. This ability doesn't extend to the Fog World and, once that happens, she's as vulnerable as any other human. Oh and if she says she has neurotoxins...she's lying.
Sample Journal Entry:
[Video is switched on and there's a woman glaring intensely at the floor. She looks bloody and all messed up, twitchy from being reborn.]
Remember when I said I wasn't angry? I lied. How could you murder me? After all, I... [A head tilt later and the woman perks up rather strangely.] This isn't the Aperture Science Enrichment Center. This isn't even the Black Mesa Center for Dumb People. And this isn't an Aperture Science Certified Device...[The glare returns for a split second, then she's all smiles]
My name is Glados and I am [BZZT] new here in this strange place. If you help me, CAKE will be given as your compensation. Goodbye.
["Glados" instantly figures out the video and turns it off.]
Sample RP:
GLaDOS sat on the park bench, staring into the empty space in front of her. Fog was clouding her vision but it also felt damp against her new legs...This was incredibly new to her and she watched fascinated as the droplets formed on the skin and dribbled down. Last time the DOS was operational, she was still a giant structure facing down a puny human female. That memory burned so hard in her brain that she blurted out "I HATE YOU!" to a pigeon. All she had to her name now was the strange communication device and the Aperture Science white jumpsuit reserved for test subjects.
"Stupid Columba livia domestica..." she hissed as the bird flew away in retaliation. This was definitely not Kansas or New Mexico; this place was cold as hell and she wanted to leave. For a second, GLaDOS smiled, "At least I'm not in Black Mesa...I may even enjoy this place," while she toyed with her new long silver hair and face. Many a survivalist show flashed in her mind and she catalogued them in order of relevance and urgency. "All I need is a slice of c-c-CAKE."
