Saraba 2010!

Jan 01, 2011 00:24

Right, only 30 minutes of 2010 to go in timezone GMT +8 (or at least when I begin typing this entry). My parents have taken over the TV as usual (although I really want to watch Discovery Channel's Extreme Forensics) and thus, I'm here reflecting on 2010 as a whole year.

This year's particularly memorable because of my national exams, but let's not go into that until my results are out in January. I know anyone who would happen to be reading this is probably a Toku fan, right? I knew it. So, I'll give a brief overview of this year in Tokusatsu.

Kamen Rider W
What can I say? This has been one of the most solid Kamen Rider series I've viewed to date (Yes, I have yet to finish Agito or Kuuga). Sure, some die-hard fans are put off by the amount of humour in each episode. It doesn't matter, really. The humour's really an added bonus that comes with the great story and awesome action, and it's not as 'painful' as Den-O humour might be to some. I remember very clearly how I used to eagerly await the next episode on Sunday morning, even as my parents nagged at me to prepare for tuition at 11am. ESPECIALLY the evil cliffhanger between episode 15 and 16... Episode 16 was well worth the wait though, as you might have noticed from my long rant about that single episode.

Review: 9/10 The series is rock solid, with great action and story. However, the CGI can be rather painful at times, especially in the first few episodes. If you can ignore how horrible it can be, you're set for an awesome show that has attracted many non-Toku fans. W was popular enough to appear in 2 Movie Wars, 1 mid-season movie and 2 V-Cinema releases due next year! I mean, it's like Den-O except more widely accepted and loved!!

Samurai Sentai Shinkenger
This counts, alright? The last few episodes were shown this year, so suck it! XD Anyway, this was the first ever Sentai I started watching (though it wasn't the first I finished). I really liked how the show is so rich in Japanese culture, yet isn't too foreign for us non-Japanese fans to follow. The show is full of awesome, heartwarming and funny moments. Sure, there was a drought of plot-driven episodes in the middle of the series, where it basically got more ridiculous and light-hearted with all the filler episodes, but why not? The show has won the hearts of many fangirls and fanboys alike, drawing more viewers after Disney announced that they would stop producing Power Rangers after RPM. But we all know what happened to the franchise...

Review: 8/10 Your mileage may vary, but I really liked this series. It was apparently popular enough to get a V-Cinema movie, a first for the Sentai franchise.

Tensou Sentai Goseiger
I couldn't get past episode 3 without cringing at the acting. Why, the furthest I ever got was episode 6, the 'trial' period of Tokusatsu. I really don't want to give this a verdict. Please, don't make me do it.

Kamen Rider OOO
There are mixed opinions of this show among the fans. So far, it's been an interesting run, but it kinda gets boring after a while with all the medals getting passed back and forth. "Count the Medals" indeed... I'm confused. Nonetheless, I look forward to every subbed episode, awaiting another well-written fight scene. After all, what else can be expect from the writer of Shinkenger and Ryuki?

Review: 7/10 Again, your mileage may vary. Some people aren't sold on the show itself and have even dropped the show, but I personally find this a good excuse to motivate myself to finish whatever I have to do to watch the next episode.

So, other than Toku, what else have I been geeking on? Let's see...
1) GARO
2) KARAS
3) JAM Project
4) Kageyama Hironobu

Oh darn, it's already 12 midnight. Happy New Year!

*ahem* Back to the topic.

5) Super Robot Wars
6) Photography
7) Stunt acting!
8) Iron Man 2

So, what's next for this Toa, you ask? Well, I resolve to:
1) Lose weight!
2) Go to a good JC/Poly!
3) Watch Gokaiger!
4) Be nice to SR and not suan her every time!
5) Finish the Den-O complete marathon with QC and SR!
6) Finish Kamen Rider Blade!
7) Get my Black Belt in Taekwondo!

That's about it, I guess. It's 12:12am here now and I'm tired. Good night and to those who have yet to celebrate your New Years, erm.... Happy New Year!
