In-Game Backstory: Yumichika was born and raised in Rukongai, although which district is unspecified. He followed Ikkaku around so that the latter of the pair could fight whomever he so wished. Once they ran out of strong or willing opponents for Ikkaku to fight in one district, they moved onto another district.
In one of these (#80) Ikkaku finally tasted defeat at the hands of Zaraki Kenpachi, and hencforth decided to follow Zaraki Kenpachi so he may have another chance to fight him. By the time Ikkaku found Kenpachi, he had become the captain of eleventh. He had told Yumichika that it was unnecessary for him to follow Ikkaku, but Yumichika declined this offer to stay behind.
He is seated as the fifth of eleventh, even though he is on-par with most (if not all) of the lieutenants in Seireitei, mainly because he refuses to move from the squad Ikkaku is in. Because Ikkaku is seated as three, and Yumichika dislikes the number four, so he seated himself as the fifth. His favorite number is three.
He fought Ganju in the saving-Rukia arc and lost, but it was revealed later that had he used his sword (his Zanpakutou) to its full known extent, he probably would have won. He only recently revealed it in his battle with Charlotte Coolhorn. He is afraid that eleventh would kick him out if he revealed that his Zanpakutou has magic (kidou) properties, because they prefer more direct physical offensive attacks.

Ikkaku was assigned to go to the real world to go on this mission, and so Yumichika decided to tag along, because he will follow Ikkaku anywhere. He lives above Mala Suerte! and says that he will move out once he gets work and enough money to rent an apartment, but since work is hard to come by and Yumichika is pretty sure Ikkaku could use his help at MS!, he probably won't be leaving very soon.

I would die for... I would die for my division. No, there is a lot that I would die for. It doesn't really matter what I die for, but how I die.
What is your guilty pleasure?
Well, sometimes I watch those silly human stories called Soap Operas. They're much too overdone, so they don't quite fit in with my aesthetic. I am also particular to... what do you call them? Truffles.
If you could kill any living person in the world, who would you kill?
I wouldn't kill anyone. That's against the rules. If I had to kill someone though, it would have to be that Joan Rivers woman who's on television sometimes. She's absolutely vile. Oh silly me, I should have said a murderer. No, scratch that. I would have to kill a murderer, or a rapist.
What is your favorite thing to do when you’re alone?
I like to think and meditate. But there is hardly a time when there isn't work to be done in my division, so it's hard to think of something besides sleeping.
What is your biggest pet peeve?
Can I only pick one? Oh... hm. I hate it when people don't take care of their hair. There are so many people I've seen with greasy hair and split ends. What's more, these people always have unflattering haircuts. Why is it always a group of people with all three symptoms of bad hair? Unbelievable.
If you could be on one TV reality show, which would it be?
I'd love to be on Fear Factor, actually. I know being on Project Runway would be much more glamorous, but it just wouldn't be much of a challenge to be the most beautiful.
Do you believe in love at first sight?
Love at first sight is so trite. I believe love is a gradual process. It's the journey that makes it beautiful.
If you were on the Titanic and there was only room for one person on your lifeboat, would you save your mother or your best friend?
Ikkaku would be so drunk that his body could stay warm enough for the amount of time it took for him to float ashore on a plank of wood. I would be surprised if he didn't swim back and be waiting for my mother and I. He wouldn't accept the seat, in any case.
Would you sleep with your boss to keep from losing your high-end job?
What a terribly ugly question. Of course not.

Describe how you met your best friend.
I'm so glad you asked! One day, these men were making such a ruckus over in a corner. I wasn't bothered until one of them accidentally hit my face, and well! When they were so involved that they have such disregard for the beautiful, I knew I had to step in and teach them a lesson about aesthetics. A few minutes in, one of them tried to attack me from behind, so I grabbed the offending limb and threw him clear across the room. It was the last time we fought each other, because he knows I would win, of course. But I'll never let him forget my victory.
Describe your first kiss.
The sun was peeking out from over the horizon and I had just taken this beautiful girl out all night for a walk. Really, she had the prettiest eyes. We shared thoughts... well... she was a good listener. Anyway, I walked her back to her house and kissed her good morning. It wasn't very spectacular. I was rather disappointed.
Describe a situation in which you took charge.
I was sent to the human world once, and there was a soul who was attached to his bakery, still. He said that he couldn't move on to Soul Society because his mother was so frail and had never gotten the opportunity to eat a cake he baked. Well, it's my job to send the dead to the afterlife and would have been irresponsible of me to not take action. My teammates and I baked and tasted cake after cake until it was perfect.
