As a background to the Medicine Seller's existence, one must note that he is an exorcist-aside from being your ordinary Medicine Seller. What does he exorcise? Ayakashi and mononoke.
An ayakashi is a demon that is unnatural and has always existed around the world and its people. They in themselves cause havoc, and their ways are not understandable to human beings. However, a mononoke is a transformed ayakashi-one that has preyed on the strength and destruction of human emotions, whether it be sadness, guilt, anger, and what have you. Combined with just the right chain of events, the mononoke will take form . . .
That's why the Medicine Seller's around.
He's here to vanquish all ayakashi and mononoke, and to do so, he'll be watching you.
