It was carelessness on my part to believe that the shogunate intended the Itto-ryu as their koukenjo-the official school of swordsmanship for the Bakufu. I did not create my Itto-ryu to lord over shiftless ronin. However, to fail to seize this chance would thwart my grandfather’s ambition, and thus, I took it ( Read more... )

so very bamf, wtf, affected, bakufu diaf, crowning moment of fail, don't cross the hisachan, curse, turning fail to ambition, two sides to a coin

An allusion to wild dogs, girl.

You mean like wolves? I've always thought there was something dreadfully thrilling about wolves. Just thinking about their howl sends a delicious thrill up my spine. Just think how exciting it would be, running through the woods with your pack, breathing in the crisp, delicious night air and then finally HOWLING at the moon! I tried to howl at the moon once -- it was a harvest moon and it just seemed to sing of magic and animal energy -- but Mrs. Spencer slapped me and said only crazy people howled at the moon, and if I tried that again she would send me to the mad house.

Do you think the moon gets lonely, and that's why wolves howl at it? To keep it company?

Have you ever faced a pack, or even one wild dog, girl?

Well, no. There aren't any wolf packs in Hopetown. Or in Nova Scotia at all, I think.

But I did see a rabid dog once! It was really scary, and we weren't allowed to go outside until one of the men had shot it and animal control had taken it away. But I couldn't help feeling sorry for the poor thing. It hadn't asked to be sick.

And those around you aren't asking to be sick either. That is why it had to be eliminated. It is a choice of that dog, or you, girl.

Oh, I know. I'm awfully glad that Mr. Henderson was such a good shot, and all things considered the poor thing died very well. But it's still very sad for the dog.

The pity of a child. Ah.

Wouldn't YOU feel sad for the dog? Even though you knew it had to die?

No.

For humans, however, it is a different story.

Why? We're all living, breathing beings. We all feel pain.
