so after much anxiety-inducing preparation, my parents' 25th anniversary surprise shindig finally went down last night. fortunately, everyone who said they were going to come did, and a good time was had by all as me and olish sat in the kitchen, taking shots of tequila and making drink after drink, watching my stone-sober parents and their friends/siblings make total fools of themselves singing, dancing, putting on wigs, and making mock speeches. unfortunately, the "surprise" in surprise party didn't actually come into play. i guess i should have prepared for it better, but our original plan involved olish using his mom's car to pick them up as we pretended to go somewhere else--and on friday i found out that his mom was going away for the weekend, so that meant no car for us. instead, we picked up the heroes from the catering place, walked into my parents' house, and yelled "surprise! you're having a party!" as we presented them with the sandwiches. they liked it. and i must say, as much as it was not much different than our normal corny and lame family get-togethers, i rocked out to boston's "more than a feeling," my funfetti cupcakes and pudding pie were a hit (as were olish's eggplant parm and chicken cutlets), and i had fun discussing the merits of p!atc (hi, melanie!), fall out boy, and bayside with my 12-year-old cousin. how cute--she told me she wants me to take her to the lily allen show in june! but i checked today and tix are sold out. lame central.

(afterward, me and olish came home, and about an hour later he totally threw up! what a loser, getting that drunk in my parents' basement! haha.)

oh, and on friday night, i hit up the bars in hip & happening kew gardens with belma and sam. we actually had a great time! we went to this place called the austin alehouse. it was full of older white/white-trash people, as well as two creepy guido guys who kept commenting amongst themselves on the food we ordered, and it kind of made me a little nostalgic for glenlo. haha. we played songs on the jukebox and ate some appetizer-ish food and then decided to explore the 'hood. from there we went to this bar on 78th & queens blvd that looks like white-trash central, but actually wasn't so bad inside. all five people in there were age 50 and up, however, so we bounced pretty quickly and went up about two blocks to this bar called cobblestones (i think?) because it looked like there were a lot of people inside. while sam was on the phone, one guy popped his head out and was like "i'll buy you ladies a drink!" which then caused us to debate whether or not we really should go in after all. but lo and behold, the guy was not as creepy as that first impression would have led us to believe, and we wound up playing a round of darts with his brother and some other guy. he did actually buy sam and belma a drink, but i'd stopped drinking at that point and was determined to kick some ass in darts. i don't think we actually finished the game, but it was fun. i was crying from laughter because belma was horrendous and kept breaking the darts and totally missing the dartboard altogether. the guys we met were these four brothers (who, it turned out, had two additional brothers who weren't there--crazy) who grew up around where me and olish live now. they were super-nice, normal people--not slimey or weird creepos--all in their 20s. one of them told me about how all 6 of them lived in a 2-bedroom apartment growing up. can you imagine? he said there were 2 bunkbeds in each room and his parents would sleep on their fold-out couch. for some reason, it's stories like that that almost make me wish i had a bunch of brothers and sisters who had all grown up so closely. i wonder how it would have changed the way i am as a person today. yea, these are the things i think about. anyway, after some good conversation about queens and the neighborhood, i went home. i <3 being able to walk home from a night out. holler!

today i'm in clean-up mode. just got back from the gym and i'm putting off taking a shower like whoa. i also need to put away clothes and swiffer the floors, but writing in lj is much more entertaining, obviously. i also want to just sit here on the couch and read a book while i have the apt all to myself. i haven't done that on a sunny sunday afternoon in a while. i think i might do that right now!
