Just got out of the slammer

I went to Pasay Youth Home this morning for my EC177 fieldwork. It's a juvenile institution housing around 18 boys who I used to refer to as kids but after what I saw earlier, I decided to call them just boys even if their ages were from 12-17. Anyway, they're what you'd typically refer to as, for the lack of a better term, THUGS. Some had tattoos all over, most were enormously built and some had committed murder. My partner and I almost shit ourselves when we gave our introductions but good thing they cooperated and much to our surprise, we had fun administering the interviews and surveys.

Some of the boys even opened up to us about personal issues they were facing and as well as what their crimes were. One of the things that really stuck with me was this one dude named Don Don who didn't want to get out of the institution because he had no idea how he was going to support his 2 kids from different women. He's only 17. It was pretty hardcore.

On a funny note, one boy's' streetname was Funchum. Like the juice.

Also, some of the things I learned were:
  • Just because it's illegal doesn't mean it's wrong.
  • True justice only exists in our heads.
  • Weed knows no boundaries. It unites. Therefore: legalize.
  • Music is life.
  • Nobody can challenge Tupac's street cred.
