Dear Hilary,
It is our regret that we have to inform you that we will not be able to accommodate you in the Japanese class that you wished to enroll. Our sincere apologies. (Sumimasen)
Because of the state budget cut, we have started this year with two fewer sections than usual in our Japanese 1 classes. The budget cut has made it impossible to take all the students who want to enroll the classes offered in the Japanese program this quarter.
We hope that the situation will improve so that we will be able to accommodate more students in the future.
Best wishes,
A___ C___
Ps. Japanese 1 will cover lessons 1 through 5, so if you can study these lessons by yourself, using the textbook, workbook, eJapanese etc., it will be a good preparation for the placement exam for the winter quarter. You are also welcome to visit me during my office hours. I am very sorry again for not being able to have you in the class this quarter.
Sorry, I can't be mad at you, Sensei. You are too cute. I CAN, however, be frustrated with the budget cuts, because there used to be two more sections of Japanese 1 apparently? So, SCREW YOU, The Man. I will stick it to you in the due course of time.
Regarding The Tale of Genji and the Makioka Sisters:
Prof. W is one of those extremely smart people who doesn't really come off as a teacher--more of a perpetual student, if that makes sense. The classes we have had so far were extremely discussion-based, which I like. Also, the Tale of Genji itself?
HILARIOUS.
Man, you'd think I was joking, but it is so modern--or timeless, I guess--that I am completely charmed. It's more of a romance than an epic, which rules, because it sort of reads like the "Gossip Girl" of the Heian dynasty, to an extent. And Genji is The Shining Prince, Chuck Bass.
This is, uh. Meant to be a compliment. I really like this book and this class, is what I'm saying.
Maybe I should take a nap...
