Hikaru had rediscovered his kotatsu while cleaning out storage bins and, like he often did with things rediscovered, decided to put it to some use. Setting it up in a cool part of the garden area of the botany lab, he figured he'd ( Read more... )

Mars flipped through some files on her PADD and realized she needed them to be signed off by Mr. Sulu. Surprisingly, neither of them were at the helm during this shift, and she realized the only place she'd find him (at least he's predictable) was in the botany lab. She had to admit, it had been a really long while since she had visited him down there and was remotely interested in what was growing.

"Mr. Sulu..." She called out at the door to find him with Charlene Masters at a table. It appeared they were sharing a blanket at the table too. "Oh! Is that one of those tables with a heater?" She was oddly drawn to it's convenience and well, cute-ness.

Engaged in conversation with Charlene, Hikaru didn't hear Mars approaching until she addressed him.

"Oh! Hey, Mars!" He was feeling less self-conscious about the kotatsu since he wasn't the only one using it now. "It is, indeed. Would you like to join us?"

She was carrying PADDs and looked like she was on official business, but he didn't see why that should keep her from sitting with them for a spell.

She walked over to an unoccupied section of the table and sat down, drawing the sheet over her legs. "Wow!" No wonder the two looked so pleased.

"Um, I just have some things I need you to sign off of... Did you bring this from home?" He didn't strike her as the traditional type, but this was actually quite nice. She felt like she needed a cup of hot tea to complete the situation, but she wouldn't bug her host about it.

As Mars discovered the wonders of the kotatsu, Hikaru and Charlene shared a look of playful smugness. Wow! was an understatement. Hikaru hadn't been under the kotatsu for 20 minutes, and he was already unable to think of being anywhere else.

"Oh sure, no problem..." he said, taking the PADDs from her and reading over the material before signing it. "Actually, there wasn't enough room in my Starfleet-issue rucksack for a whole kotatsu, so I had to build the table here on the ship. You can't tell from this angle, but it looks like crap. I'm a helmsman, not a carpenter," he added with a grin, handing the PADDs back to Mars.

As he took up his cup of tea (what was time under the kotatsu without tea? or sake...), he saw Mars glancing at it and realized that perhaps his guests would like some. Grabbing a couple clean beakers that happened to be in arms' reach, he apologized for being so rude and offered to share the rest of the pot of tea with them.

At his description, she wouldn't know any different. The wood was smooth and he took time to put a lacquer on it. "Well, you had me fooled!" Still, it was quiet comforting to sit there.

He had handed her a beaker, and she was about to ask, What do I do with this? when he held up a pot of what she assumed was tea. "Interesting choice in fine China, Hikaru!" She laughed and allowed him to pour some in. "Can you pass me the sugar?"

"Well, on my lab supplies form, I specifically requested an antique tea set with six cups each featuring a different wife of King Henry VIII, but somehow I ended up with these things..." he replied with feigned disgust as he poured the tea in Mars's and Charlene's beakers.

"Oh, yes, I almost forgot the sugar...and here's some milk, too," he said, setting everything onto the table-at a safe distance from his craft materials. It occurred to him that a tea party with girls wouldn't elevate his scrapbooking-at-the-kotatsu situation, but he certainly wasn't going to complain about sharing the company of some of the most attractive and pleasant ladies that Starfleet had to offer. Chekov'll laugh at me, but he'll be so jealous!

"So what have you been up to lately?"

"Oh, nothing much. You know with all that holodeck insanity, Mr. Riley and I got caught up in what appeared to be a western of some sorts.... Don't ask. It was pretty crazy." She waved her hand and took a sip of her tea - delicious! She wondered if he had the tea leaves or grew them himself.

Leaning into the table, she pulled the PADDs he signed back towards her. "Are you... scrapbooking!?" She was shocked! What photos did he have? She realized had seen Charlene looking at them as she came in. He didn't have any embarrassing ones of her, did he!?

"Ugh, that holodeck mess! I'm glad that's all sorted out now. Though it did make me appreciate not having pterodactyls and possums on starships."

Hikaru startled a bit at Mars's exclamation. "Oh! Yes, I believe I am," he replied with a crooked smile. "Care to join us?"

He pushed a pile of unsorted photos towards her, along with a pair of decorative scissors. "If you're going to sit here and drink all my tea, I might as well put you to work!"

She took a sip of tea from the Beaker and thought it tasted slightly off. She hoped it was because it was a brew of a variety of tea leaves she was unfamiliar with and not because of the beaker itself. But she just covered up her distaste and decided to drink it regardless.

"Oh, sure! Any specific...." She didn't finish her sentence, because the picture she held in her hand was a very unflattering one of her at a party at some point on the Enterprise. She was about to stuff what looked like a hotdog in her mouth. "Hikaru! This is awful!" She flipped through the stack and found a couple of Chekov eating. "Ok, now I don't feel too badly." She held up a blurry one with Chekov's potato chips everywhere on the helm. "Maybe you need to make a page or two for horrible food portraits!" She sighed, yet with a smile on her face.

Hikaru startled again at her sudden exclamation. She kept doing that. Looking over at the photo she was holding, he had to laugh out loud. It was a great photo; he had always liked pictures of people eating.

"Hey, that's an excellent idea! But it would mostly be Chekov, and I already have a few pages of him. I would have to stalk people in the mess hall with my camera!"

He watched Mars flip back to the picture of her eating, then lunged over to snatch it away from her. He knew she would try to keep him from using it, but he wasn't going to let her get her way.

[ooc: is mars bipolar or is sulu's tea magic? didn't she like the tea just a post ago? haha!]
