I'd like this better if it weren't called a journal. It sounds too personal. My manifest willingness to shoot my mouth off about my experiences and opinions evaporates as soon as I'm the nominal topic of conversation.

You can call it anything you like, of course. It can be a journal, a photo collection, a place to post erotica (someone I know has a second journal called $hername_smut specifically for that), a Weblog (though you have a fine one already).

I'm doing a bunch of first drafts for my zine, mixed with a blog, and when I actually talk about my real life, I headline the particular entry "Journal."

I've never kept a journal. Even the thought of the word, with all its obligations, makes me come out in hives. It's more a collection of fumes.

I use my LJ for three purposes:

1) To keep in touch with my friends, who also have LJs (of course) - this is the most important.

2) To bitch and moan in a controlled environment where only people I know (on my friends list) can see it. (My main blog is too damn public -- my parents and siblings read it, never mind J. Random Public ( ... )

Your #2 was the reason I started my LJ. Your #1 ended up becoming almost as important. I had to blow off a lot of steam around my feckless cousin's wedding, and I knew that my uncle and my other cousin (feckless cousin's brother) were both readers of my regular blog...

They call 'em journal. I call it 'blog'--which means, to me, blab about what one wants to.

Of course, you do have Making Light. But the truth is, wherever you talk, people are going to listen.
