I know I should read this thing more when I saw Lee's post about airlines and ticket cost.  I deal with this everyday of my life in some form or other.  Customers who are pissed that they have to pay fees for changes or that their flight price goes up and almost every time the words unfair, price-gouging or thief comes up.  It can sap your strength ( Read more... )

I'll own up to taking responsibility for buying non-refundable tickets but I did not expect the changes to be $720 before I even got to the difference in ticket price.

It's the fact that doing the changes would cost nearly *three times* what it cost to just buy different tickets which, obviously, sent me hunting for deals from other airlines.

Is the airline better off having charged an exorbitant change fee and driving me to another airline? Or would they have been better served to charge a smaller change fee plus difference in tickets?

I begrudge no one their right to profit or margin but there's not enough money in the world for me to pay 3x the price just because I did something stupid.

Surely you'd agree 3x the price of a new set of tickets is a little excessive?

But your point is well taken. We were warned and, even though we were sure we were right, we were wrong and needed to make a change. But we knew there would be fees going into the deal.
