I can't recommend some books enough, which is an awkward way of saying I really want you to read some things. I'm not sure why Tamsyn Muir's Gideon the Ninth caught my eye, but it was amazing, and the sequel, Harrow the Ninth, was trippy quality. Both have an experimental tip to them, in that the author plays with POV and ambiguity, while being solid science fiction/science fantasy.
In an entirely different milieu, I'd recommend the Hidden Legacies series by Ilona Andrews. Much more straightforward paranormal romance, but with a well-developed world that keeps giving even after the protagonist's main story. I'm always a sucker for a found family narrative and the collection of strays the sisters accumulate warms my cold dead heart a little.
