All:
I just returned from the 7:00 p. m. showing of the Joss Whedon movie
"Serenity" (held at AMC Clearwater Theater). Thanks to the assistance of the good people at Grace Hill Media, we had free tickets to see the movie...provided we reviewed it. We arrived to a theater where every seat was taken, as the buzz on this movie was so strong.
My main commentary is as follows:
When this movie hits the theaters on Friday.....Go see it.
Joss Whedon, the Oscar® - and Emmy - nominated writer/director responsible for the worldwide television phenomena of BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER, ANGEL and FIREFLY, now applies his trademark compassion and wit to a small band of galactic outcasts 500 years in the future in his feature film directorial debut, Serenity. The film centers around Captain Malcolm Reynolds, a hardened veteran (on the losing side) of a galactic civil war, who now ekes out a living pulling off small crimes and transport-for-hire aboard his ship, Serenity. He leads a small, eclectic crew who are the closest thing he has left to family -squabbling, insubordinate and undyingly loyal.
If you never saw the television series, "Firefly", I recommend you go to your local video store to rent it, and spend the Columbus Day weekend boning up on the characters of the series. While a person unfamiliar with the television series doesn't need to see it to get up to speed, it certainly helps to understand some of the characters in more detail, and why one should want to care about these people.
For those who are familiar with "Firefly" (and Joss Whedon's way with his characters), this film will not disappoint. But be warned--Joss' penchant for surprises that rip your guts out is still in full force. I can tell you no more of this, without giving away major spoilage--but this I can tell you:
1. All of your questions about River Tam will be answered.
2. The Reavers (and their origins) will be discussed.
3. Joss has put in some plot twists that will break your hearts.
4. Many of the loose ends left from the series get tied up nicely.
5. Special Effects are so seamless and non-distracting that you don't notice they're special effects until you're discussing them after the movie.
6. To quote my wife, "I can watch River Tam slice & dice Reavers alllll night!"
7. This movie has more violence and gore than the TV series ever did...however, the implied violence inflicted by the Rievers is far worse.
I say all of this to say that this is an excellent telling of the story of the people who crew "Serenity", with quite a lot of action, suspense, and a plot that will keep you moving and breathless all the way through to the end.
Oh...and did I mention...Go see it.
