I'm never going to be able to afford "the" surgery.  Maybe the surgeon will let me wash dishes for her for, oh, the rest of my life.

The price that serves as the title of this post is the $18,500 quoted by Marci Bowers, a surgeon in Trinidad, Colorado, with a couple thousand added to cover the 3 weeks and change I'd need to take off of work; it doesn't include things like air travel and preparatory laser hair removal, which would probably kick total expenses up closer to $22,500 at least.

For Thailand, which is about the only other place with surgeons I'd trust my body to, I'd be looking at anywhere from $7,500 to $10,000 for the surgery, about $1,400 for round-trip airfare (if I were to go by myself), the $2000 for the time off of work, and $1000 or so in miscellaneous other costs. So, about $13,000 altogether. Which, while still an intimidating sum, is considerably cheaper.

The problem with Thailand, however, is that Michigan has this shitty little law where, if I don't have the surgery state-side, I can't get the letter on my birth certificate or driver's license changed.

Plus, from the testimonials I've read, Marci has a pretty good track record for making sure there is a normal amount of 'sensation' post-surgery, if you catch my meaning.

So, I dunno. At this point for me, $13k might as well be $22k for all the chance I've got of saving it up.
