"So what's the big deal with the Emerald, anyway?" DG asked, twisting something made up of gears and wires in her hands. She was sitting on a set of metal steps in Glitch's two-story lab-slash-library, watching him sort through papers and books and random pieces of machinery, while Raw moved the books to the shelves and Cain pushed crates and boxes around.
"Did I go into their office and move their things around?" Glitch asked the room then turned to DG. "Sorry, DG. Did you say something?" DG pushed up from the steps and took a few steps across the room to the desk and set the thing in her hands down.
"My mother took the rock from Az and said it had to be put in a safe place. If it was only good for stopping the witch, why put it away? The witch is gone." Glitch gave her a patient smile and placed a hand on her shoulder.
"If only it was that simple. That chunk of precious gem is more than just a pretty color."
"Old magic," Raw said quietly, pushing between them to grab another stack of books.
"Older than the witch?" DG asked both of them.
"Story goes," Cain started, bringing a small box over to the table and pointing to it, giving Glitch a nod toward it. "-that emerald was inside an egg."
"An egg? Like a golden goose-egg?" DG asked, imagining the little men from the Eastern Guild with orange faces and green hair. She snorted a laugh and narrowed her eyes, watching Cain move back into the corner for another box.
"Actually," Glitch said, rummaging in the box. "It was from a chicken," he stated with a grin, holding up a small metal sculpture that was painted like a chicken. DG raised an eyebrow and took the small trinket from him, frowning as she gave the thing a look. It reminded her of a plastic army man, only not green and not plastic.
And painted to look like a chicken.
"A chicken?" she asked, moving to the stool at the end of the table.
"A chicken," Glitch said with a nod, finding nothing else of interest in the box. "Belonged to your grand-whatever," he said, waving toward her.
"You mean Dorothy Gale?" DG asked, sitting up straight. Glitch nodded and turned as Cain stepped next to him with another crate.
"No."
"It did. And," he turned to DG with a cheeky smile. "-it could talk."
"It could not talk and it wasn't the same chicken," Cain said, rolling his eyes slightly. He stepped around Glitch and nodded to the small statue. "Dorothy Gale had a chicken -that couldn't talk," he said, turning as Glitch opened his mouth to state just the opposite. "But the Gnome King was already afraid of chickens."
"The Gnome King?" DG asked with a look of skepticism.
"Bad man," Raw said, moving back to join them.
"The Gnome King didn't like chickens because they were poison to him. So when Dorothy showed up with a chicken..."
"He freaked?" DG asked.
"Yeah. But she didn't know about the poison. She didn't even know he had the shoes."
"Shoes?" DG asked, shaking her head.
Glitch nodded and pushed between Cain and the table to look at DG. "Yeah. The shoes were version one of the Emerald."
"The beta," DG offered, shaking her head a moment later when all of them simply stared at her.
"Anyway," Cain shook his head. "He had the Emerald, but he didn't know it was the Emerald. The legend was that it hatched from an egg."
"A chicken egg," Glitch supplied with a nod. Cain glanced at him and nodded.
"So, the rock came out of a chicken-"
"That couldn’t talk," Cain said again, as Glitch had opened his mouth. Again.
"-and this Gnome King-guy had it." The three men nodded. "And then Dorothy Gale got it because the Gnome King, what? Went into anaphylactic shock at the sight of a chicken?" The men stared at each other for a moment and shrugged.
"I already graduated school," she groaned and dropped her head to her hands. "There's gonna be lots of reading, isn't there?" she asked, looking up with a frown. Cain smiled and Raw nodded. Glitch moved over to her side and pulled DG into a half-hug.
"It's okay... I'll help you study." DG looked up to Glitch and smiled.
Sighing, DG shook her head. "I get the feeling this'll read like a bad movie."
