"Of course I was that adorable when I was one! Doubly so because there were two cute little babies running around!" he said with a laugh as he moved around the chair, perching himself on the arm to get a better look at the photo album. "When I was one, you couldn't tell my sister and I apart unless we were naked... it made for double the cute family Christmas cards!"

Demyx opened his mouth to say something about the cigarette, but judging by the look on Riku's face, saying something would probably get him shot; besides, he was sitting by an open window so he couldn't complain too much. He had a feeling that it was always going to be like this: Demyx would nag Riku about his smoking and Riku would just flip him off while continuing to smoke, and honestly, Demyx would see himself getting used to it all and just nagging out of habit as time went on.

The blonde listened quietly as Riku shared the stories about the pictures, a sad smile crossing his face when he recgonized the date on the bottom of the picture. "Oh, Riku..." his fingers joined those of his husband on the photo, turning his head to kiss him softly. None of the people in the picture had any clue that the next day would bring disaster that would completely change everything. He may not have been family, but he still remembered where he had been when the news broke of the death of his favorite musician.

"This one...?" he asked with a soft smile, his fingers moving over the watch that his partner wore on his wrist, trying to bring out happier moments rather than the sad ones he knew the picture had to be bringing up for his younger husband.

"You know what it means when you say that people couldn't tell you and your sister apart, right?" Riku grinned at his partner to inform the other, in a wordless way, that a nasty jab was coming his way. "You're born to be a gender bender. Ditch the mullet, put on a dress and a pair of heels and no one will know you're a guy until they get you naked...!" The younger made sure to keep his cigarette at a reasonable distance from his older partner, aware that he hated his one major vice and being as respectful of that dislike as Demyx was being not nagging him constantly about quitting. He knew he had to quit; there was a sign in flashing halogen that read "QUIT SMOKING" blinking away in his mind, but he had tried and failed so many times he was waiting until the summer, when things calmed down, to make attempt number 4.

He tipped a little cigarette ash off into the ashtray as his gaze continued to linger on the photo of the last normal Christmas he had had. He recalled wanting to stay in bed until noon, at least, but his mother had nearly grabbed him by the ankles and dragged him out of bed at 9 that morning. She was like a kid when it came to Christmas, and Riku's father always said that that was what made Christmas for him. Nothing made her happier than having the family together for Christmas. But a day later, that was all extinguished and his father may as well have died in that car crash along with his mother. While he knew there was nothing that could have changed his mother's fate, the memories of identifying her body that afternoon still haunting him in his nightmares, he always wondered if he could have prevented his father from taking his own life years later. They had never been close, and it was only after his death that the silver-haired youth understood why, but he always felt that he could have stopped him and have at least held on to his father instead of becoming an orphan. His mind was brought out of its deep melancholy when Demyx brought his attention to the rather battered-looking watch on his wrist, the pale young man offering the other a small smile.

"Yeah, this one," Riku responded as he looked at the watch that adorned the same wrist on which the tattoo he had gotten in his mother's memory was inked. "My mom picked it; my dad was always useless with picking out presents. It's had two new batteries and really needs a new strap, but... I love it. It's the last piece of my family life and I'm not up for letting it go yet. I still have the fucking iPod they bought me, even though I dropped it in the ocean three times and it stopped working about eight months ago. It's even got bullet scratches on the back casing, as a testament to how much it's been through with me." He finally turned the page to a letter that Riku had put in the album himself. It was his final correspondence with his now-deceased father, the letter having been written the day he died but only received some days later. "Kept this, too. I always thought I kept it to punish myself, so I'd always think that I could have saved him but I didn't, but... I think I held on to it because it was the first time it ever felt like he genuinely loved me... "

"Don't get me wrong, I'm not sitting here preaching daddy issues to the choir," the younger swimmer looked up at his lover after having taken another discreet drag of his cigarette, extinguishing it after that. "We didn't fight all the time and he wasn't a bad person, I just never felt attached to him. The letter gave me some attachment, so I kept hold of it." The next page was the start of the most recent chapter in his life, featuring a picture of himself and Kairi in the college cafeteria. "Kairi, before she lost her taste in men...!" he laughed lightly, unable to resist making that barb at the girl. His unique relationship with Kairi had seen its fair share of ups and downs, but it was one of the things from his past that had endured alongside his beaten-up old watch.

Demyx laughed softly at the jab at his appearance, unable to resist ruffling his husbands hair, messing up the usually perfect silver locks. "Oh come on now! We've both seen me in a skirt and we agree that I don't have the legs for it!" The grin quickly faded at the look of meloncholy that had come over his longtime lover. The blonde ignored the cigarette as he gently nudged Riku over, sliding comfortably into the chair beside him; sure, it was a tight fit, but it gave him the perfect opportunity to slide his arms around the younger one to pull him close as he finished his cigarette. "She loved you so much, Riku, that much is obvious from all the things you've told me about her."

He slipped into silence for a few moments as he listened to his partner, a soft smile crossing his face. "I wish I could have met her..." He nudged Riku teasingly, "Think she would have approved of me dating and marrying her son or would she have chased after me with something designed to cause pain?" He was trying to do his best to cheer up his partner, but with the book that was now spread across both of their laps, he wasn't quite sure that it was going to happen unless something else in that album would bring happier memories. When the page was turned again and a familiar red-head came into view, Demyx knew that things were on the right path to happiness and that the small box he had brought downstairs with him just might help.

"It's Kairi, I think all she has is bad taste in men, after all, she was in love with you for a while, wasn't she?" He couldn't resist teasing Riku as he reached over the arm of the chair, his fingers moving over the box he had sat on the floor. "You know, you're not the only one that's been visiting Memory Lane lately. I was digging through a pile of papers the other day looking for something I needed for class and found something very interesting..." the blonde smiled over at his lover. "I found our marriage license from Vegas and uh, we managed to miss our drunken one year anniversary. I know we've been busy and we were drunk, but you'd think we'd remember something like that!"

"So, what I guess I'm trying to say is..." he placed the box into Riku's hands, kissing him softly. "Happy late anniversary."

"I won't argue; you really don't have the legs for drag..." Riku mused aloud, thinking on this point a little more before elaborating. " Well... no one said you had to be a pretty gender bender...?" Another jab at his lover. He had fun mocking and teasing him on a regular basis; he felt it kept him fresh and on his toes for when he had to put up with the weekly crap from the swim team her still captained. He'd been running them a bit like he ran his boys back in the day, but even Coach had to admit they were in the best form they'd ever been in and were assured of more silverware to add to the case at the end of semester.

With Demyx now squeezed onto the chair with him, the younger of the two wanted nothing more than to push aside the feelings of sadness that were now plaguing him at the memory of those he had lost. Partly because he hated feeling so sad, as it meant he'd actually have fodder for his shrink to pluck out and chew on during their three-times weekly sessions, but partly because he could feel it all circulating around Demyx as well, and it was starting to become suffocating.

"I think she would have tried to kill you," the silver-haired islander stated flatly. "Would have taken a cleaver and put it through your head." A laugh then fell from his lips as he nudged the other playfully. "No, I think she would have liked you because you're her type: goofy, childish, stupid..." another grin and a laugh from the younger male before thoughts and attention turned to happier days of recent times.

"Exactly. The girl has fucking horrible taste in men!" Riku agreed, aligning his own opinion with the attempted barb by his lover. He thought Kairi would have to have terrible taste in men to have ever had any glimmer of attraction to him. "Me, Tidus, Zidane... she really does know how to pick the worst possible guys to go all stupid and gooey over! What is it with girls these days picking bizarre and creepy guys?" It was no secret that Riku had a deep distaste for Kairi's current dessert du jour, but he could be civilised with him now, much unlike before.

Riku took the gift from his partner before softly hitting him on the head with it, opening it with a soft smile, kissing his cheek.

"Thanks, that's very sweet of you," he thanked him as he thoroughly investigated the new watch strap. "Have to take this to a jeweller anyway, because fuck if I know how to put a watch strap on! Oh, and check behind the couch. You present is back there. I say present, but I didn't buy it, I found it amongst my dad's things last time we were there and have been meaning to give it to you. You can't be all into music without one of these! It was one of his newer models, so take good care of it, alright?"

"And does that mean that I have horrible taste in men? After all, I did marry you twice!" he teased with a laugh as he slid his arms around Riku. "Come on, you're like Kairi's older brother, I don't care if she's dating the most perfect man in the world, you're still going to find something about him that you don't like! It's just how things are supposed to be! You threaten the boyfriends and make sure that they're going to treat her right and then you go to tolerating them!" He smiled and kissed him. "Just going to have to get used to the idea that Zidane is going to stick around for a while!"

"I noticed that the strap on the watch kept getting worse and worse looking so I just thought you could use a new one... and now maybe you'll stop stealing my damn iPod! Not that I mind, but you put some weird ass music on there!" he teased as he leaned over to kiss Riku before getting up to investigate his own gift. "Behind the couch you say..." he mused with a grin, the smile getting bigger at the sight before him.

"A fucking turntable?! This is awesome!" The musician ran his hands over the records that were piled next to the turntable, unable to turn the smile off as he crossed the room and turned his attention back to his lover. He made his way back into the chair, but instead of sitting beside him, he straddled Riku's lap, making himself comfortable as he pulled his younger lover into a kiss. One kiss quickly became two and two became more as the two enjoyed their moments alone together.

"Thank you...~"

"It does mean you have horrible taste in men," Riku responded simply as he found himself instinctively moving into Demyx's open arms. "Look at the guys you were dating before, and I say dating loosely. Then you decided to scrape the bottom of the barrel and go for the quiet guy with a rap sheet longer than your arm. Pretty shit, if you ask me...

"But with Kairi," the silver-haired young man picked up the conversation again after a brief pause. "I always thought she'd end up with Sora. You say she was in love with me for a time, but that was nothing compared to
the huge crush she had on Sora. With the way they acted together, we were all just waiting for them to announce that they were going steady. I usually just hit on her to drive him mad, but I really did think they'd end up together..." he trailed off with a soft sigh. "Tidus was just an asswipe; that guy, I have no idea what his name is now, who popped along with the same name last year was kinda creepy at first, but I was unnaturally harsh on him. Then there's Zidane, and I really don't know how to rate him... I just don't like him. He acts like someone of class and dignity with all that stupid bullshit he spewed down the phone at me, and then the next minute he's some "hard ass player" who's got all the ladies after him and he truly believes he's like no other and can get whoever he wants whenever he wants. I don't know whether to take him seriously with Kairi because of that. I think I'm the only one who doesn't actually like him, because everyone else is part of his cheerleading club, including you." Aqua-green eyes looked into the eyes of his lover. "I think his personality and mine clash, because he's kinda stuck up his own ass and I'm, well, I'm just a fucking prick. I'll be civilised, but I wouldn't be invited to the wedding, let's put it like that..."

The younger then descended into silence though Demyx's kisses and thank-yous and all of that, barely even kissing him back as his mind slipped into thoughts about the years ahead. While they had been thinking
about the past, Riku also had been thinking about his future and what it had in store for him. He had decided, back when he got his father's suicide letter, that he had no intention of living past 30, a secret he had never
dared to share with anyone, not even Demyx, knowing they'd start smothering him or trying to talk him out of a possible suicide. It was his own choice as to how his life was going to end, and the fact of the matter was that Riku was just unable to see a future beyond then. His ideal way to go would be to go out in a blaze of glory on the field of battle, and something niggling away in the islander's mind told him that that wasn't in the far-flung realms of the impossible. For weeks this feeling made the younger male believe that something bad was coming his way, and the odds were on that he wasn't going to live through it. While maybe it hadn't been
the longest life, he had experienced happiness and had everything he'd ever wanted for himself, so he didn't feel it would matter too much now.

Besides, at this stage he'd just had enough.

A soft laugh left the blonde's throat at the mention of Kairi's boyfriend. His husband was such an overprotective big brother when it came to the younger red-head, not that Demyx could blame him. He had always been protective of Kyla when he'd been home, but once he left, she fell into the crowd of wrong guys and abusive boyfriends and was now a single mother, something that Riku would murder people for if it ever happened to Kairi. But Kairi was smarter than to get herself in that situation... of course, he had thought the same thing about his sister and now he had a one-year-old neice that was as close to having kids as he'd ever get. And, he was completely okay with that! The animals would be their kids and they'd be the crazy old guys on the corner with lots of nieces and nephews and animals, but no kids of their own!

A soft smile crossed his face as he hugged Riku, resting his head against his shoulder as the mental image of them growing old and grey together. Well, he'd grow old and grey and if he was anything like his father and grandfather, he'd be old and wrinkled with a full head of hair. God, he loved his genes! Though, Riku was a different story entirely. His hair was already silver, how would that change as they got older? Would his hair darken with age instead of lighten as most people's did? That was something to think about, that's for sure. He snuggled closer as he allowed his mind to continue to wander to the future; the two of them retiring to the Islands and getting up early to go for morning walks on the beach and enjoying retirement from their respective careers, through Demyx knew that neither of them would ever completely retire. They needed the excitement in their lives to keep active and keep things interesting!

Demyx didn't know what the future would hold, but they still had at least sixty years together, if not more, to see what kinds of adventures they could get involved in. And Demyx, for one, was looking forward to watching it all unfold.

He nuzzled Riku's neck gently, a soft apology leaving his lips. "Sorry... got a little lost in thought there."
