I'd Rather Jack (than Fleetwood Mac)

I just read bobaloo 's latest installment in his fun series of hidden gems/guilty pleasures, where he mentions Mel & Kim, one of the acts produced by Stock Aitken Waterman back in the late 80s / early 90s. I used to love them! I started watching video clips of them and other SAW acts, and I was pleasantly surprised to find a video of my favorite S-A-W productions.

Being in my junior & senior years of high school, and carrying over to my freshman year of college, I of course wanted to be considered cool and edgy, and wore my alternative bands with pride - Bauhaus, The Smiths, The Cure, Depeche Mode.

Behind closed doors, and when no one was within earshot (headphones if they were) - the hi-NRG & Stock Aitken Waterman 12" records, cassette singles and cds could come out of hiding. Bananarama, Dead or Alive, Kylie, Mel & Kim, Pat & Mick, Pepsi & Shirley, Yazz & The Plastic Population, even my old Wham records. These were equivalents of moped sex in my record collection - I totally flamed out when I heard these records! Seriously, like singing-in-the-hairbrush and doing dance moves in the mirror. Girl!

One of my favorite-est 12"s from that era was another S-A-W production for the two sister team The Reynolds Girls, "I'd Rather Jack"  For a while, it was the gayest 12" I secretly owned. Maybe it was horrible cover, or the really bad hair. Maybe it was because all of my high school stoner friends would only listen to classic rock. Whatever it was, this song is still pure pop fun, it still makes me giggle (and wiggle) a little bit.

All we wanna do is have a good time
Then you went and took our house away
No one ever asked for our opinion
No no we don't get a say

AM, FM, all that jazz
We'd rather sing along with Yazz
What ever happened to the radio?
They never play the songs we know.

Golden oldies, Rolling Stones, we don't want them back
I'd rather jack than Fleetwood Mac
No heavy metal, rock & roll music from the past
I'd rather jack than Fleetwood Mac

Can't they see that every generation
Has music for its own identity
But why the DJ on the radio station
Is always more than twice the age of me

Who needs Pink Floyd, Dire Straits
That's not our music, it's out of date
Demographic stereo
They never play the songs we know

Golden oldies, Rolling Stones, we don't want them back
I'd rather jack than Fleetwood Mac
No heavy metal, rock & roll music from the past
I'd rather jack than Fleetwood Mac

Wow, who knew The Reynolds Girls could have been so prophetic in regards to the sad state of radio today? They were so ahead of their time.

Here are The Reynolds Girls with the video from their (only) hit, "I'd Rather Jack"   Enjoy!
