Two Criminal Acts

As the trial of the Craigslist killers carries on, I wish that I was on the jury. Of course, I'm not, but I'm fairly sure tha those involved have breathed their last as free citizens. After seeing how Kioshi Higachi carried himself at his arraignment hearing, smirking at Charlene Sanders, making obscene gestures and swearing as a guard tried to block his view of the woman who Higashi turned into a widow, I want more than anything for this reprobate sack of human effluvium to rot in Walla Walla Penitentiary for the rest of his days.

Recently, the former president of a local Mothers Against Drunk Driving chapter was pulled over and arrested for driving under the influence. And what an influence it was: her percentage of alcohol was 0.239, three times the legal limit. That's nothing new, lots of people drive drunk, and many of them are pulled over. But the thing that irks me is that in covering the story, a local reporter says that the reason for the incident was "some personal problems, that she's really a nice woman and that she just made a really bad mistake."

Fail.

Drunk driving is not a "bad mistake". It is an affirmative act that you do. You choose to drink alcohol, and you choose to get behind the wheel of a car while intoxicated. It is not an accident, that is what will happen when those things are lined up. I am tired of people who minimize drunk driving by calling it a mistake or an accident. It is a reprehensible criminal act and should be treated as such. That doesn't mean "lock 'em up, throw away the key," but it does mean to stop making excuses for bad behavior.
