Chapter 20

Patrick checked the mirror in the hospital locker room. Elizabeth had been kind enough to stop by his apartment and bring his suit back to the hospital after her shift ended. She actually had been eager to do it once he told her his plans. He knew that Robin would be anxiously waiting for him to return, but if everything went the way he was hoping it would, she would quickly forget about his absence. He straightened his tie and grabbed his jacket.

“Hey Sport.” Patrick turned to see his father leaning against the lockers watching him.

“Hey Dad.”

“Don’t you think you’re a little overdressed for the hospital?”

Patrick felt like a little boy who just got caught with his hand in the cookie jar. “Probably, but not for a date with Robin.”

“Oh, I see,” Noah said. “Looks to me like you have something more than just a date planned.”

Patrick smiled. “Well, if everything works out the way I hope it will, then you’re going to be very happy for me.”

Noah smiled at his son, suspecting that he knew what Patrick was planning. “You would happen to feel like sharing what’s on mind with dear old dad, would you?”

“Not a chance,” Patrick said closing his locker. “You’ll just have to wait and see.”

Noah smiled as he watched his son practically waltz out of the locker room.

Elizabeth had come by to visit as soon as Emily had called her with the news that she was awake. Robin had enjoyed the visit and even roped Elizabeth into helping her with a shower. Once they had gotten her back in bed and fixed her hair, Robin felt like she was human again. She smiled as Patrick came into her room. “What’s with the monkey suit? Have you got a got a hot date or something?”

“I do have a date with the most beautiful woman in the world,” he said smoothly.

“Really? Anyone I know?”

He slowly made his way over to the bed. Robin was unable to take her eyes off of him and again wished that she was home with him in their bed.

“You might know her. She’s a doctor in this very hospital.”

“Oh, I’m sure I know her then,” she said running her fingers along the lapel of his jacket. “What does she look like?”

“Well, she has dark brown hair, these gorgeous brown eyes, and although she’s very short, she more than makes up for it with her fiery personality,” he smirked.

“You think you know me so well, don’t you?”

“Are you trying to say I don’t,” he replied.

“I suppose I could let you keep your delusions of grandeur a while longer, but only if you kiss me before I change my mind.” He quickly leaned in and joined his lips with hers. Robin opened her mouth and their tongues began to intertwine. Robin moaned wishing yet again that she was home instead of lying in a hospital bed.

Reluctantly, Patrick pulled his lips away from hers and trailed his fingers across her lips. “We will definitely have to make up for lost time when I get you home.”

“I can’t wait,” she murmured kissing his finger. “You never did tell me why you got all dressed up just to come visit me.”

“Didn’t I?” Patrick teased.

Smacking his arm, she said, “You know it’s not very nice to tease me, especially since I’ve been sitting here wondering where you’ve been for the last hour.”

“Is that what you’ve been doing? Because it looks to me like you’ve kept yourself pretty busy while I was gone.”

“Paaaaaatriiiiiick,” Robin began to whine.

“Ok, ok,” he said, holding his hands up in surrender. The truth was that he hadn’t been nervous up until now, but suddenly the words were caught in his throat and his palms were becoming sweaty.

“Patrick, what is it?” Robin asked with concern.

“Robin, I’m….I’m about to make…uh…” Patrick silently cursed himself as the words continued to trip over themselves as they tumbled out. Taking a deep breath, he started over. “I’m about to make a well thought out request…a monumental request actually…and one that has been on the tips of my lips for some time now…I’m…I’m about to release it…”

“How many beers did you drink while you were at Jakes’?” Robin asked him.

“What?” Patrick asked suddenly confused. “I haven’t been to Jake’s in weeks.”

“Are you sure, because you’re acting kind of strange…”

“Am I?” Patrick asked, adjusting his tie. “Let me start over.”

“Good idea,” Robin told him.

Clearing his throat, Patrick continued. “Robin, you have accused me of not being able to make a commitment and you’ve given me reasons for that….good reasons……reasons that I wouldn’t even have admitted to myself. You’ve said that I was afraid of making a commitment and I’m afraid that you were right. Probably more right than you’ve ever been in your entire life.”

“Well I don’t know about that. I’ve been right about a lot of things, especially where you’re concerned.”

“ROBIN!” When she snapped her mouth shut, Patrick said, “Would you please let me say what I have to say before you comment?” Robin nodded and Patrick inhaled deeply. “Well what I’m trying to say is that I’ve thought of something much more frightening than a commitment. A much more scary….probably the most awful, frightening thing that could happen to me in my life and that is losing you. Losing you would be worse than death.”

Robin couldn’t keep the tears away as she listened to Patrick pour his heart out to her. “You really believe that?” When Patrick merely nodded, she said, “Patrick, are you asking me what I think you’re asking me?”

Looking into her eyes, he said, “I’m asking you to marry me Robin. There’s nobody else like you. There’s nobody I love as much as I love you. Be my wife?”

“I….I don’t know what to say,” Robin stammered, hardly believing that Patrick, the eternal playboy was asking her to marry him.

“Well, a simple yes would suffice,” Patrick asked hopefully.

Robin had to take a steadying breath before she could answer and when she did, it was only a whisper.

Holding his hand to his ear, Patrick said, “I’m sorry, was that a yes?”

Beaming, Robin squealed. “Yes Patrick. I will marry you!”

Patrick was nearly bowled over as she threw her arms around him and planted little kisses all over his face and then stopped to look into his eyes.

“I would be honored to marry you and become your wife Patrick Drake.”

Bringing her lips to his for another kiss, he had to keep reminding himself not to let it go too far, but she was sorely tempting his resolve. He put his hands on her shoulders and gently pushed her away. Robin groaned in frustration.

“No more of that right now. Besides, I promised Epiphany that I would make sure you took your meds,” he said reaching for the medicine cup on the table and handing it to her.

As he reached for the water pitcher, she said, “I think you’re the best medicine for me right now.”

“That might be true, but why don’t we use it in conjunction with the standard treatments just to be safe.” Patrick held onto the cup of water and waited for her to agree.

“Well, I suppose it couldn’t hurt to…” Robin froze as turned the cup over in her hand and stared at the object that fell out. Looking back and forth between the ring and Patrick’s smiling face, Robin was speechless.

Looking into her hand, he said, “Now how did that get in there? Epiphany!” He called out.

“Pa…Patrick, it’s so beautiful,” she said breathlessly. “How did…how did you…”

“I told you that I’ve been thinking about this for a while now,” he smiled.

Holding the ring up, she said, “You mean to tell me that you’ve had this ring since….since when Patrick?”

“About a month I guess,” he shrugged.

“A MONTH? You’ve had it for a month?”

“Yeah, well it took a week or so to get over the shock that I had bought it and then…I was waiting for the perfect moment…”

“Did you just bellow Dr. Drake?” Epiphany asked from the open doorway with her hands planted on her hips. Patrick had forgotten that he had called the charge nurse and jumped at her authoritative tone.

“He just got over excited Epiphany, but he’s fine now,” Robin reassured her.

“Well, now that you’re awake, I expect YOU to rein him in and keep him from bothering the nursing staff who have better things to do with their time than cater to doctors who aren’t even on duty.”

Robin stifled a giggle. “I’ll do my best Epiphany.”

“You do that,” Epiphany said as she turned to leave, but stopped and turned back around. “Dr. Scorpio, it’s nice to have you back.”

“Thank you Epiphany,” Robin said as the nurse walked away and they both erupted in laughter. Wiping the tears from her eyes, Robin looked at the ring again.

“Here, let me,” Patrick said, taking the ring from her and sliding it on her finger. “How is that?”

“It feels good,” she sighed. “I don’t believe this.”

“What?” He asked.

“You’re not the man I love…you’re better,” she exclaimed.

“Well step right up and meet the new, improved Patrick Drake,” he said, leaning in to kiss her nose. Moving down to plant more kisses along her neckline, he murmured, “This year’s model has all of the options.”

“You don’t say.” She leaned her head back as he continued to kiss her.

“He comes fully loaded with power sunroof, heated seats, and cruise control.”

“What about navigation? I wouldn’t want to get lost,” Robin asked.

“You get that too,” he said, kissing his way back up her neck. “Let me show ya…” he planted a kiss on her cheek, “…which button to push.”
