CHAPTER 13
It had been three hours since Jason had dragged Jerry off to where ever Jason dragged people off to. Three hours since Robin had slipped away into a coma where he couldn’t reach her. Having frantically worked with Alan, Emily, and Epiphany to stabilize her vital functions, Patrick could only sit in her room and wait. The sound of the ventilator that was breathing for her had been a comfort two hours ago, but was now beginning to grate on his nerves. He wished there was something he could do because waiting was not only unproductive, it also allowed an endless cycle of what ifs to torment him. What if this illness damaged her brain or some other vital organ? What if this triggered the HIV lurking in her body to convert into AIDS? And the worst what if of all - what if she never woke up? Patrick ran his fingers through his hair in frustration. There was a reason he operated on patients and, except for post-op checks, turned their care over to nurses - waiting sucked.

Robin felt the last breath leave his body as she clung to him, her head on his chest. She saw Sonny standing at the end of the bed and saw his lips moving, but couldn’t hear the words. She didn’t need to hear them though because she knew he was asking if Stone was gone. Her throat felt so tight that she just nodded rather than trying to speak. She desperately held onto his body as she closed her eyes and the tears rolled down across the bridge of her nose. Maybe if she held on tight enough, he wouldn’t be gone. She wished she could hear his voice one more time. She concentrated, trying to force her mind to recreate the exact sound of how he said her name.
“Robin?”
His voice seemed so real, she didn’t dare open her eyes. Her heart was already broken into a million pieces and she was sure the disappointment of him not being real would kill her. If she just kept her eyes closed, then maybe she could imagine him standing there.
“Robin, please.” Her eyes flew open at the light touch on her hand. The only thing that made sense was that he was really there crouching down beside her. His beautiful, smiling, perfect face was looking right at her filled with such love that her heart felt complete and unbroken again.
“You’re here; you’re really here,” she managed to say.
“Of course I’m here. Your heart called to mine, so I came,” he said simply.
“Stone, I thought you were gone forever.” She felt the tears make their way down her cheeks as she sat up and flung her arms around his neck.
“Not gone, just hidden,” he said.
She pulled back, again looking into his eyes. He was different. There was something older and wiser about him. As curiosity crept into her thoughts, she turned away from him to look around. The beauty all around her was simply stunning. The light that flooded the entire room starkly contrasted the darkness and shadows in Sonny’s penthouse where she had been moments before. Cream colored pillars bordered the open space that led out to a balcony. Beyond the balcony, there was the most electric blue sky she had ever seen. The magnificent and intricate murals on the walls seemed to be alive with energy. Stone was dressed all in white, his brown hair just long enough to brush across his shoulders. Looking down, she saw that she was wearing a matching white dress that was made of the most comfortable fabric she had ever worn. They were sitting on the edge of a gorgeous marble fountain. Water tumbled down several tiers filling the room with a peaceful background noise that echoed from every wall.
“Do you like it?”
“Like it? It’s so beautiful Stone. It’s like a dream or something.”
“Or something,” he said laughing.
Robin looked back at his face. The redness was gone from around his eyes. The worry was gone too. All the damage that AIDS had done to his body had been swept away as if it never existed. He was her whole, healthy, perfect Stone again.
“Kiss me,” she said suddenly. Stone smiled and brought his head down to hers, hovering for just a moment before gently meeting his lips with hers. The kiss was tender and sweet, just like Stone and Robin’s heart flipped over in her chest. Stone pulled back slowly and looked into her eyes.
“You are so beautiful Robin, inside and out, and I am so lucky that you came into my life.”
Robin couldn’t contain the energy in her body any longer. She jumped up and began dancing around the room eventually ending up in front of Stone.
“Dance with me,” she said holding out her hand. Stone smiled, accepting her hand. They twirled around the floor, wrapped up in each other, until they collapsed in a fit of laughter.
“If this is a dream, I don’t ever want to wake up,” Robin said, planting a kiss on his lips. She saw sadness flicker across his face when she pulled back from the kiss.
“Stone, what’s the matter?”
Taking her hand into his, he said “Robin, you can’t stay here.”

Mac looked through the window at Patrick sleeping in the chair beside Robin’s bed. Robin had been through so much. She didn’t deserve so many of the things that had happened to her. Her parents’ deaths, losing Stone, HIV, the hell Jason had put her through, the Metro Court crisis; it was all so unfair. Mac had tried his best to protect her, but it hadn’t been enough.
“You look like a man with the weight of the world on his shoulders.”
Mac turned and saw the same worry he felt reflected in Noah’s face.
“I could say the same thing about you.”
Noah smiled weakly, and then turned to look through the window.
“You want to put your kids in a bubble and protect them from everything bad in the world.” Mac heard Noah say after a few minutes.
“I tried to do that with all the girls.”
“At least you tried. I wish I had with Patrick,” Noah said sadly.
“It didn’t work,” Mac sighed. “Even with the best of intentions, you can still screw it up pretty bad.”
“Robin loves you like a father and, unless I miss my guess, Patrick thinks of you in that role too.”
Mac smiled a little. “I hope that means Patrick is afraid of what I’ll do to him if he ever breaks her heart.”
Noah returned the smile. “I know he is because when he came back from his little Vegas trip, he asked me if he could hide out at my place.”
“I was ready to string him up over that until he showed up at the station looking so pitiful, that I caved right in.”
The sound of a throat clearing caused both Mac and Noah to turn around and see Alan standing there.
“You’ve got a pretty serious express on your face Alan. What is it?” Mac asked. Alan quickly shared a concerned look with Noah. Having been Police Commissioner for over a decade, Mac recognized that Alan was trying to force himself into portraying a calmness he didn’t feel. “Alan, we’ve been through a lot together with her and you’ve always been completely honest with me through every crisis. Let’s not change things now.”
Alan looked down at the folder in his hand, which only increased Mac’s concern.
“Mac, there’s really nothing new or worse since she slipped into the coma.”
“But?” Mac asked.
“But, there was something I wanted Noah to look at.”
Alan passed the folder to Noah, who opened it and began to flip through the pages. Noah gave Alan a puzzled look.
“Any one care to clue me in on what you’re looking at?”
“Well, it’s an EEG which measures electrical activity in the brain,” Noah explained. “These were done on Robin about an hour ago.”
“And something’s wrong, isn’t it?”
Noah shared a look with Alan before shaking his head.
“No, not wrong, just unusual.”
“Unusual?”
“Well Robin is in a coma, but if I didn’t know that, I would say she’s dreaming.”

“What do you mean I can’t stay here?” Robin asked Stone. Instead of answering her, he looked over her shoulder. Turning her head to follow his gaze, Robin was surprised to see a woman standing there, her white dress moving gently with the breeze.
“Hello Robin,” she said with a warm smile. Robin stared at the blond woman unsure of how this stranger knew her name. Turning back towards Stone, Robin looked into his warm brown eyes.
“Stone, I don’t understand what’s going on. Who is she?”
Stone glanced at the woman once again before taking her hand into his. “She’s a friend.” He ran his thumb across the back of her hand and then brought her hand to lips, gently placing a kiss on her skin. Robin had the uneasy feeling that he was trying to say goodbye.
“Stone…”
Looking back into her eyes, he released her hand so that he could place his hands on her cheeks. “Robin, I love you. Everything will be ok, you’ll see.”
“Stone, don’t leave me,” Robin pleading, placing her own hands over his.
“I won’t Robin, not ever.” She felt the tears rolling down her cheeks as he slowly faded away before her eyes. She tried to hold on to his arms, but he slipped right through her fingers.
“Stone, come back! You promised not to leave me; you promised,” she cried out. Turning around, she saw the woman still standing there, watching her.
“What did you do with Stone? Where did he go?” Robin demanded.
“He’s still here,” she said in an irritatingly calm voice. Looking around at the empty room, Robin decided that the woman must have lost her mind.
“What are you talking about? I don’t see him.”
“Do you have to see something to believe it exists?” Robin stared at the woman. Of course there were things you couldn’t see that existed, like emotions, but people physically existed and that meant you could see them. The woman seemed to glide across the floor as she made her way to sit beside Robin. “Do you believe that your parents love you?”
“Of course they did,” Robin answered quickly. Just not enough to stay with me, Robin thought sadly looking down at her hands.
“That’s not what I asked, is it? Right now, do your parents love you?” The woman prodded.
Robin glared at her. “My parents are dead.”
The woman tilted her head and smiled. “So?”
“What do you mean so? There’re dead.” Robin felt the frustration building up inside her.
“And you think that means they stopped loving you?”
Robin looked at her unable to follow the logic. People died and then you had to find a way to live with the hole they left behind. The woman stared back with such intensity that Robin turned to look out beyond the balcony at the electric blue sky. “Robin, love is in our souls, not our physical bodies.”
Robin snapped her head towards the woman in anger. “Are you serious? You expect me to believe that love is forever?” Standing up, Robin let her rage take over. “That’s the biggest load of crap I ever heard. Nothing last forever; certainly not love,” she spat. “People say they love you, but that only means they’ll hang around for a little while. Sooner or later, they take off and leave you to pick up the pieces.”
“You don’t believe that.”
“Don’t tell me what I believe. You don’t even know me!”
“That’s where you’re wrong Robin. I do know you very well and have for a long time.”
“Well I don’t know you. Why did you even come here? I was happy. I was with Stone and then you come along and he’s gone.”
“Is he?” Throwing her hands up in frustration, Robin stalked to the railing, gripping it until her knuckles were bloodless. The combination of the intense brightness and her own swirling emotions caused hot tears to fill her eyes. She squeezed her eyes shut to stop them. Through everything that had happened, losing her grandmother, both her parents, her health, and now Stone, she could never remember feeling so lost and unsure. Taking care of Stone had kept her so busy that there was no time to think about a future. She stood there feeling the breeze brush against her cheek. She remembered how Stone used to run his fingers along her jaw line. Reaching up, she pressed her hand to her cheek. She felt arms wrap around her body like a warm blanket and just stood there trying to freeze time.

Dr. Cooper walked into the conference room and sank down into the soft, leather chair. Alan and the rest of the dayshift would be along shortly to brief his team, but he had wanted a few moments alone to prepare. He had spent the last half hour reviewing Robin’s chart and was thankful that he had gone home for some rest, because from the looks it, it was going to be a long night. She was already on a respirator, her kidneys were starting to shut down, and one way or another, tonight was going to be the turning point. From a strictly medical viewpoint, if she made it through the night, then there was a good chance she would make a full recovery. Like he had told Emily though, it was extremely hard to be detached and purely objective. Years of experience had taught him that time could be a friend or an enemy. Right now, he wasn’t sure how much time they had left.
