August Outgoing

So long to August 2008, and meteorological summer.

It's funny. Summer ends about 5 times around here this year: August 31 (meteorological end of the season), September 1 (Labor Day), September 3 (last day of summer vacation for the kids), September 6 (annual trip to Hampton Beach for the seafood festival & fireworks), September 22 (the day that summer actually ends, and autumn begins, otherwise known as the Autumnal Equinox).

This weekend was good. Great fireworks in Gloucester on Saturday night. A late night out with a couple friends after that. Sunday we had Nathan's 9th birthday party (he turned 9 earlier in the week). Very nice. Now I'm watching a few hours of that telethon that has a very meaninful existence (fighting neuro-muscular diseases), but as kids we always saw it as the end of summer vacation. When you saw Jerry on the tube, you knew you'd be back in the classroom in a couple of days. Of course, now, some towns already started. I think it's too early, but at least here we still go back after Labor Day.

So as summer ends I'm glad my family, close friends, and I are in generally good health, and were able to enjoy some good times. I hope the fall months hold more of the same.
