Colby bounded up the stairs to David’s apartment, taking them two at a time until he was standing outside the door. His hands were shaking as he fumbled with the key and cursed under his breath before finally gaining entry.
He looked around the apartment as he walked through and called out to David. He was disappointed when he got no answer. He had hoped that he would be there so that he could tell him the news.
He quickly moved into his room and retrieved the box that Callie had formally packed his clothes in. He opened it up on the bed and his usual nature of being neat and organized was thrown out the window as he nearly tore his clothes off of the hanger and stuffed them into the box.
Right now, there was only one thought on his mind - he had to get back to her.
Even after everything that had happened…after all the pain that they had both gone through, she still loved him and now she wanted him to come home. He’d never wanted anything more in his life.
After dinner the night before, the two had talked things over. It had been difficult and emotional for both of them and there were still a lot of things that needed to be worked out. They both knew it wasn’t as simple and admitting that they still loved one another. They both had a lot of mending to do.
Colby smiled as he remembered fondly how every touch…every look…every word from her had begun healing his shattered heart, little by little. He’d watched as slowly, the hesitation in her eyes melted away and she started to open up to him again.
Finally, he hadn’t been able to keep it to himself any longer and as he held her, he whispered to her that he loved her. At that point, he hadn’t cared whether or not she was able to say it back…he understood what he’d put her through…but his heart had soared higher than ever before when she’d pulled back and told him that she loved him too.
He took a look around the room, and satisfied that he had all of his things, he scribbled a note to David and then headed out of the apartment and down to his Jeep. He tossed the box of his things inside and as he turned the key, he smiled again.
The two had ended up tangled together making love slowly and tenderly. Each movement was wrought with emotion and meaning. They took their time…remembering each other…learning each other again. They whispered to each other words of love and of the longing that they’d both felt without one another. This coupling had nothing to do with the physical and everything to do with regaining their connection…finding themselves once again in the other. Both had gone far too long only being half a person and as their bodies moved together - their hearts beating in time - they finally felt whole once again.
Hours later, Callie had fallen asleep in his arms, but he hadn’t dared to sleep. He was too terrified that he would wake up and find that this had all been just a dream. Too many times he’d had dreams much like this, only to wake up and find that he was still alone - still lost without his Cal. He wanted to hold onto this for as long as he could. So, he’d watched her sleep and it had been just what his heart had needed. He didn’t dare move, for fear of disturbing her and barely breathed, desperate to cling to these moments.
Finally she’d stirred and moved to snuggle against him and for the first time all night, he dared to move as he pulled her closer to him. His entire body relaxed upon feeling her nearness and then she’d turned in his arms and threaded her limbs through his so that she could get as close to him as possible.
He held tightly to her and then she’d spoken…the voice of an angel - the voice that had saved his life on the freighter. He had so many reasons to be grateful to her - so many things that he still needed to tell her.
They had talked a lot the night before, but he still wasn’t convinced that she knew exactly what she meant to him…exactly what place it was that she held in his life. Then she’d spoken up again and told him that she wanted him to go back to David’s.
He swore in that moment that his heart stopped and he knew for a fact that he wasn’t breathing. The room began to spin around him and his stomach tightened as he waited for her to say something…anything else.
Never before had he felt such relief than when she finished her thought and told him she wanted him to go get his clothes from David’s…and she wanted him to come back home.
He turned down the familiar road that led to the house that he and Callie shared. The ocean breeze washed over him and whipped through his hair and he let his mind drift to just how very much it meant to him to have Callie back in his life. Life…that’s what it meant. He didn’t have a life without her…he’d found that out the hard way. For the first time since she’d given his ring back…he was feeling alive again.
He saw the house now, just ahead and his heart started racing. She was there…she was waiting for him to come back. She was giving him a second chance to be in her life and he was going to do everything in his power to make sure that he didn’t mess up again. Whatever happened…he couldn’t lose her again and he couldn’t bear to think of her shedding a single tear because of him ever again. No…he was going to make her happy…happier than she’d been before all of this even.
He pulled into the driveway and looked at the house for a moment. He closed his eyes and took a deep breath as he said a silent “thank you” to God for allowing him this chance and to prove to Callie that he was the man for her. He would spend every day for the rest of his life taking care of her and being there for her in whatever way she needed him.
One day, he smiled, she would be his wife and he hoped that she would be nearly as proud to be so as he was to be her husband. They would have children and he would pamper her while she was pregnant and help her in every way he could to take care of the children. He would comfort her after hard cases and be angry with her when she needed him to be. He would give her massages and share bubble baths with her…surf with her and feed her ice cream in bed after a night of passionate love-making. Yes…he would have all of these things with her…all of these things that he’d given up on.
He stepped out of the Jeep and grabbed his things before closing the door. He walked towards the porch and felt warmth rush over him as he caught a glimpse of Callie inside, happily unpacking some of his things and putting them back in amongst her things.
He opened the door and when she looked up at him, they shared a smile as he sighed, “I’m home.”
