My first mission was definitely an amazing experience...one I certainly learned from.

It so happened that McKenna was unable to make it to his post and therefore, I was assigned to the U.S.S. Enterprise! I could hardly believe it as I took my seat and familiarized myself with the control panel.

All was going well and Captain Pike comes onto the bridge. This was my chance to show him that even though I wasn't the first pick as Helmsman, I could do a better job and show more heart than McKenna ever could. My heart was pounding with excitement and anticipation and when he gave the order to take her into warp, I moved through the motions flawlessly and waited for the beautiful ship to burst forth.

A few seconds later, the entire bridge was immersed in surprised silence as all of the ships around us disappeared and there we sat, quiet and still. I could feel myself reddening as Captain Pike directed his attention to me and I introduced myself, explaining that I was replacing McKenna.

I was flustered now, as I checked controls and he questioned whether or not I could fly and if I had the parking brake on! The parking brake! I glanced over to find that the Russian seemed to be greatly amused and just when I thought I couldn't be more embarrassed, Mr. Spock asked about the external inertial dampeners.

I wished in that moment that I could make myself very small, but instead, I quickly corrected the problem and alerted the Captain that we were ready for warp. I can guarantee you that THIS will never be a problem again!
