Spike hefted his bag over his shoulder and smiled at something that Lewis said before he spotted Kira out of the corner of his eye. He tried not to let his friend see that he was immediately distracted, but that was something that guys always noticed.

Lewis raised his eyebrows before shaking his head, “I’m telling you man…she’s out of our league. Why don’t you let me hook you up with someone? In fact, I have a date tonight and I am sure I could call her and talk her into bringing a friend.”

Spike adamantly shook his head and gave his friend a stern look, “No…you know I hate being set up on blind dates. They are awkward and weird and uncomfortable and did I mention, awkward?”

Lewis laughed and pat his friend on the back, “Well, if you change your mind, just give me a call, ok?”

Spike nodded, though he knew that he would not be making that call under any circumstances. He wasn’t that desperate for a date. In fact, he wasn’t desperate at all…he knew exactly what he wanted. He just hadn’t worked up the nerve to go after it yet.

Lewis gave his friend one last look before he called out, “Night Kira!”

Spike’s heart lurched at the sound of her sweet voice as she replied, “Night Lewis!”

He took a moment to nonchalantly watch her, as he often did when he was sure that no one was looking. He’d wondered so many times what she would look like out of uniform. He blushed slightly as his mind moved forward with: clothed or unclothed. He shook that thought from his mind and risked another glance, this time, his gaze lingering on her golden hair. He’d never seen her with it free of a clip or a braid and more than anything he wanted to know what it would look like unbridled.

He took a deep breath and moved closer to her desk and when she looked up at him, she smiled and he swore that his heart stopped for a moment. He was instantaneously lost in her blue eyes, as was always the case and for a moment, he forgot everything, including his name and was certain that he must look like a fool standing there before her, with his mouth agape.

She brought him back to reality when she asked, “You heading out?”

He nodded and tried to find his voice as he looked towards the door, “Yeah, it’s uh…it’s been a long day.”

She nodded as she stood up and took off her headset. “You did great out there today.”

His eyes traveled down the length of her body before he could stop himself and he could swear that she was doing this to him on purpose before he replied, “I uh…I couldn’t have done it without you. Thanks for having my back out there and getting me that intel so quickly.”

She grabbed her bag and walked around the desk, surprising Spike as she grinned, “Hey, just doing my job.”
He nodded and felt his palms growing sweaty as she walked closer to him and sighed, “I am going to head out too. The Boss told me he’d close up shop for the evening.”

She paused a moment and then looked right into his eyes as she asked, “You wanna walk me out?”

Spike immediately came back to his senses, “Yes…of course.”

He moved a couple of steps ahead of her so that he could get the door for her and nearly groaned as she walked through and he couldn’t stop himself from watching the mesmerizing sway of her hips. He took a deep breath to try and compose himself before once more falling into step beside her as they made their way into the parking garage.

She walked over to a Jeep and beamed, “Well, this is me.”

Disappointed that this brief time alone with her was already quickly coming to an end, he muttered, “Nice Jeep.”

She shrugged, “It’s ok. I’m actually kind of partial to that truck you have. I’ve been dying to go for a ride in it since you bought it.”

His eyes widened and he gasped, “Really? Why didn’t you say something?”

She chuckled, “It never really came up, to be honest.”

He nodded, and looked towards his truck for a moment before rubbing his hand across the back of his neck and stating, “You are more than welcome to go for a spin with me if you want, hell…you can even drive.”

He loved the way her eyes brightened as she asked, “Really?”

He nodded, “Yeah, of course! Maybe I could pick you up once we’ve had a chance to go home and change and then we could grab a bite to eat or something.”

He held his breath, suddenly terrified and mentally beating himself up for asking her that! Everything had been going so well and he would have been just fine with taking that first tiny step of just hanging out, but no, he had to go and open his big mouth.

She shook her head and sighed, “Oh Spike.”

He braced himself for the imminent rejection and was getting ready to retract his statement and somehow try and salvage the situation when she was suddenly leaning into him. In the next moment, she was kissing his cheek and her breath was hot on his ear as she sighed, “I seriously thought you’d never ask.”

She reached into her bag and pulled out a small notepad and a pen. He watched nervously as she jotted something down before tearing off the slip of paper and handing it to him. “There’s my address and my number. Pick me up, say…around seven?”

He nodded and tried to say something, but all words and thoughts had left him. She merely smiled as she turned to get into her Jeep. She closed the door and rolled down the window before calling out, “And Spike?”

He raised his eyebrows, “Yeah?”

She smiled, “Don’t be late.”

As she pulled out, Spike could hardly believe any of the events that had just taken place. In fact, he would have been convinced that it was all in his head except for the piece of paper with her elegant writing gracing it that he was clutching as if his life depended on it. He ran a hand over his hair and to no one he muttered, “I don’t believe it…I don’t freaking believe it.”

He looked down at his watch and then scrambled to his truck, knowing that he had to hurry home and get ready. Kira had sent a clear message that she didn’t want him to be late, and there was no way in hell that he was going to keep her waiting!
