She was crying.

Emily's eyes were instantly open and she eased herself out of bed so as not to wake Don as she carefully padded down the hallway to the nursery. Instinctively she listened for her boys on the way and, satisfied that they were all still peacefully sleeping, she made her way to the crib and took Sadie into her arms.

"Shhh...Mama's here, sweet girl," she cooed as she sat down in the rocking chair that Alan had made for her before Danny was born. She gently kissed the forehead of her newborn daughter before positioning her so that she could eat. She smiled warmly as she beheld the miracle in her arms.

A girl...her little girl...Sadie Margaret Eppes. Emily chuckled softly as she thought that she wasn't sure that she and Don could even make girls! After eight boys, it didn't really seem like there was much of a chance, but then she had come along and right on time.

She was thankful for every one of her children...but Sadie would be the last. There had been complications with her that had resulted in an emergency hysterectomy. Not that she needed any more kids, but after having so many it just seemed strange that now it was impossible and mostly it was the thought that it was not her decision that made it seem so harsh. However, not having the surgery could have meant that she would not be around to love her children or her husband and that just wasn't an option.

Emily gently rocked as she quietly hummed and breathed in the scent that only a newborn possessed. It was one that was so familiar to her and yet...one that she knew she needed to cherish while she could. Sadie. Her chest tightened as she thought of Donnie. He'd chosen the name...just out of the blue, without being prompted. Emily hadn't even known he was thinking about it and suddenly there it was...so perfect and so right for their only daughter. Her middle name was a tribute to Don and Charlie's mother and that made it even more special.

Content and peaceful as she ate, little Sadie seemed to be adjusting to the world around her rather nicely. Emily let her thoughts drift then to who she would be. How would she fare in a house full of boys -- older brothers no less? She imagined that she would do just fine, giving them back whatever they gave her, all the while wrapping her Daddy around her little finger as she had been doing since the moment she was brought into the world.

Sadie indicated that she was done feeding and so Emily covered herself before gently moving her so that she was close to her once again. She showered her with soft kisses and gentle murmurs before Sadie rested against her mother's chest and squirmed until she found the perfect spot to sleep. Emily comfortingly rubbed her tiny back and as she listened to her breathing fall into a steady rhythm, she closed her eyes and said a prayer thanking God for her family and their safety. She thanked Him for blessing her with the ability to have each and every one of her children and for the ability to care for and love them.

She wasn't sure how long she sat there, just holding Sadie and taking in everything about these quiet moments with her. Finally exhaustion began to take over and so she expertly lay her back in the crib without disturbing her sleep. She pulled the blanket over her and gazed down at her a few moments longer before whispering, "Sweet dreams, baby girl..."

Reluctantly, she left the room and quietly crawled back into bed, happy to see that Don hadn't moved since she left. He'd been so worried about her with the complications that she knew he hadn't been getting much rest and so she was glad to see that he was finally sleeping. She pulled the sheet up over him and whispered that she loved him as she settled into her pillow and was asleep before another thought could enter her mind.
