I'm probably not going to be able to articulate this well, which is a shame because one of the things I love about Bob is his way with words, the way he finds just the right ones for all things.
I was first introduced to him in 1992 when his 30th Anniversary was aired. I was at friends' house were we usually gathered at least once a week for large dinner parties/poker games/what have you. Except that night, while shenanigans were going on all around us, a friend made me sit down and watch the concert. I liked a lot of it, though some of the singers weren't my cuppa, and I faked enthusiasm for some of it. But my friend said I had to hear them with Bob on vocals, so he made me a mixed tape (*sigh* remember mixed tapes?) of all the songs that were played at that concert, only this time with Bob Dylan singing them. HOLY SHITBALLS, I WAS HOOOOOKED! But, I know what a lot of people say, and I get it, I'm not going to spend my time trying to convince you to give his particular singing style another chance if you've already dismissed it as "not for you." It's okay.
I'd rather talk about his lyrics, his writing and his poetry instead anyway. When I first heard his name in the news this year, I, of course, panicked. This was NOT the year for bright, happy stories when an artist made headlines. But, I said a little prayer that he was still with us, and low and behold, he was! And he'd won the Nobel Prize for Literature. ♥♥
And then I had to go to WAR with a large handful of my writer/author friends who were livid that he had won instead of someone else who deserved it more. I'm sorry no. That's not how it works. You don't know that they'd give it to anyway if they hadn't have given it to him. And also, you can't say, "Why? So he wrote a couple of songs, so what?" without looking at his ENTIRE collection and contributions. How he spoke for an entire generation (two really, my parents and mine) and how important his songs are and how so many of them are sung by other people. And I love, love, love that his acceptance speech was a big ol, fuck you to those same literary types I fought with. In your face literatti!
Because, seriously, no one says Fuck You like Bob Dylan. This song has been playing in the back of my mind for about a year now... I can't imagine why. :(

I just love him SO MUCH! Some of it is tied into nostalgia and associations that I've made that make them even more powerful. Like this one... I could go on and on and on about my love of one River Phoenix, but that's a post for a different time... but he was in this quiet and beautiful movie with Lili Taylor called "Dogfight" and her character just ~spoke~ to me, so hard. And this song "Don't Think Twice, It's Alright" will forever be wrapped up with my feelings about these characters and River Phoenix as a person.

And my favorite song, the lyrics of which just for some reason--in my mind--intertwined with Janis Joplin's "Bobby McGee" and with Jack Kerouac and just... I love it so much... and it makes me itchy for the open road... *sigh*
