Actually I require a GOOD plot with my porn and not just interchangeable insert tab A in slot B shenanigans that could be anyone, anywhere ( Read more... )

I'm going to be a total punk and say: "It's all situational."

There are times that I want stories that are nothing but down and dirty porn. I want LOTS of porn. I want long, drawn out, pages and pages of porn. And anything else is extraneous. In fact, in those moods, I may skim or skip the plot, just to get down to the porn. And in those moods, I'm likely to feel disappointed in those authors who don't just GO THERE.

At other times, I'm not really overly chuffed about the porn--if it even exists, whether it's fade to black, etc--because the plot is either so engrossing/good or if I'm just in a mood for relationshippiness and the smut is just icing on the cake.

Josh Lanyon is a good example of that. I actually find his sex scenes to be a) very short/unsatisfying and b) with a lot of verbiage that I find DISTINCTLY unsexy (i.e. see 'crammed') but the relationships he builds are so interesting and brainkinky to me that I am willing to entirely overlook his inability to bring the smut, as it were.

I mean, at the end of the day,if you ask me what I MOST prefer, I will bypass physical porn for emotional porn every day of the week. Except those days in which I may or may not be ovulating. :D

Emotional porn - I like that. LOL

When you're reading the pages and pages of porn, do you ever notice a lack of characterization or are those not the "glasses" you're wearing at that moment? I think when I'm in that mood, I need anonoporn - characters I could care less about that are just vessels for the tabbing and slotting. LOL

Hell porn when you're ovulating shouldn't even include NAMES. ;)

Yeah, I think when I'm in that mood, characterization, names...I'm not overly concerned about it (though I don't know I ever TOTALLY turn it off, so much as I just don't CARE). But in any other mood, characterization is absolutely paramount and I don't really like or read fic/books otherwise where the characters could be just anyone.

Can writers ever turn off their editor brains? LOL

Definitely not. But we can sometimes turn the volume down to low. :D
