Memorial Day has never really been a big holiday in my family, usually just a day off from work or school, where we hang around the house and grill a burger or two. We don't have a pool to open or a big family to celebrate with or a large neighborhood to hang out with. This year, however, I had a great weekend, probably the best Memorial Day I can remember. Friday wasn't too exciting, as I worked at Ruby Tuesday again, but I had my best night so far, earning $110 in tips for the evening, so that was a good start. On Saturday, I attended a wedding of a old high school friend, Renee Hoyt, which I was invited to by Alissa, who served as a bridesmaid. It was down in New Haven on the water and it was a beautiful day and I had a great time with some people who I hadn't seen in a while. At night I just relaxed and hung around the house, which was a nice change.
Sunday was spent up at my aunt's house in Newton, just outside of Boston. It was a big Stevens family picnic, which there have been all too few of lately. Pretty much all the relatives on my dad's side of the family were there, which also hasn't happened in a while. I spent most of the time with my sister and cousins, which is always fun. We haven't all been together in a while since Tara and Erin both just got back from school in the past few weeks. There was a ton of good food, including my grandmother's famous apple sauce and chocolate chip cookies, as well as desserts brought by a number of other people. My favorite was my aunt's Strawberry Rhubarb pie, mmmmmmmm! We also played some wiffleball, threw around the football, and watched my uncles and their cousins play an all too competitive game of bocci. Come to think of it, about the only thing we didn't do was play some drinking games, which knowing my family, they wouldn't mind at all. We also didn't even get into an accident or have any sort of automotive trouble at all, which is a first for our family while travelling to Newton.
At night, I got to see some friends that I hadn't seen in a while, as Will was in town with his girlfriend Micheline, so I met up with them and Mary at Starbucks. I really need to find a coffee drink I like though, because their hot chocolate is not very good and that's all I ever get there. Don't they have fruit smoothies or something though? Maybe I will get that next time. Anyway, it was good seeing them, and I would have gone to comedy night at Side Street with them, but instead I went down to Fairfield as Jenn was in the area for the weekend. So I hung out with her and Bridget, and Jenn and I cheered as the Red Sox beat the Yankees again. Haha! As expected it was great seeing them and hopefully we will be able to do it again soon.
My weekend wrapped up today with another picnic, this time down the street at Dave Peg's house. It was kind of like my aunt's house, except with friends instead of family: bocci, wiffleball, burgers, and this time there were drinking games, although most of them happened after I had to leave for work. By the way, Ruby Tuesday changed my schedule, so instead of going in at 5:30 like I thought I was supposed to, they called at 4:45 and said I was late and was supposed to be there at 4:30, which was especially dissappointing because when I saw it was them calling I thought they were gonna tell me not to come in, since who goes out to eat on Memorial Day? Nice of them to change it the day before I worked and not tell me though. Fortunately though, right before I left I was able to hit the winning home run for our wiffleball team, as we pulled out a 2-1 pitcher's duel! Work wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be though and I even got out early. It was a great weekend though, and next weekend has great potential too as I just found out I am not working either Friday or Saturday night, and my parents will be gone on Friday night, sounds like a party at my house! And only four days to go until then.
