Aw, that's so heartbreaking but I'm glad he realises how much she cares and lets her care for once.
I do have a question - how long ago did the zombies start? From another entry I thought it was at least some generations ago, but now I'm thinking not *that* long ago since she was able to scavenge cake mix? Are they living in some sort of safe spot since they have files and such? I'm starting to read this like I'd watch a series, and loving it.
It's been 17 years since the outbreak - Avery was 2, and Dixon was 16.
The city they live in, Haven, is on a peninsula and sealed off by a wall from the rest of the landmass. There are many cities like it, encased in walls and protected, so they exist as fortresses for humanity (and the walls collapsing or being breached are a major part of the storyline). Avery likely would have been able to get the cake mix from a supply shop, as she's a Dispatcher (zombie killer, sniper specifically) and has "ins" for this sort of thing, but the Bible she would have had to go into the city for.
I'm really flattered that you're enjoying it! I have such a soft spot for this novel and I've written / posted thousands and thousands of words from it... I really need to start working on it again.
