So far today I have held a baby and called an ambulance. These two things weren't connected and were both unexpected.
The baby was the nephew of a colleague, who seemed keen for staff members (especially those of us who are unfamiliar with babies) to hold him. I think that might have been the first time I've held a baby whilst standing up. I've never been as comfortable with babies as my mother and sister are, they're just so small and fragile (babies, not my relatives). This one was warm and surprisingly hairy for one so young. But he was calm and quiet and had tiny, tiny fingernails.
The ambulance thing happened a little bit later.
I'd served a lady and she was just standing by the counter. I thought she was catching her breath a bit, it was pretty hot and she was older. Then her eyes glazed over and her face went blank. I asked if she was alright but she didn't respond at all. Alarm bells were ringing and I was thinking of those stroke adverts you see on TV, she did look a bit droopy on the one side. I was just about to raise the alarm when she keeled over and fell on the floor. So I called out to my colleagues and started phoning the ambulance.
S went round next to her to see if she was OK. She came round fairly quickly but was clearly disorientated. I was going through all the 999 questions, trying to give as much info as I could. Luckily a guy in one of those ambulance-cars came pretty quickly. By which time the rest of the staff had got her sitting on a chair, turned the fans on and given her some water. She was taken into the staff room to be checked over and a while later two women came with a full ambulance to take her to A & E.
I hope this is the most excitment we have at work this week.
