A friend has taken his own life.

Appius/Glenn's best buddy from college committed suicide last night. Neither of us can quite believe it. Glenn has known Phil since his first day of college, on the order of 7 years ago. Phil's wife left him for another man a few months ago. Her conduct has been nothing but cruel and remorseless. Phil tried to kill himself twice shortly after she went to California a couple months ago, but since then he had been getting better. He got on medications to help pull him through. He was getting ready to go back to school for a degree in graphic design. He got plane tickets to fly out and stay with us. He was going to be here in a couple weeks, to hang out with us in Chicago for ten days. Last time we spoke, he told me he was looking forward to that more than anything else. Glenn talked to him an encouraged him every day.

It was such a futile and senseless act. I can't believe he would have done it in his normal state of mind. He went back to his old house alone after staying over a few days with a friend, and while he was there, surrounded by all his old memories of her, he hung himself. Even though he had tried to take his life a couple times before, he was no longer acting like a man on the brink of suicide. He was making plans. He was looking forward to things. He was trying to meet new people. I can only guess that he was drunk, or off of his medication, and that there, alone in that house and without complete control of himself and his mind, his judgement lapsed. A moment of weakness, a flicker in his resolve, and now he's gone. Maybe I'm wrong, but it's the only thing that really makes sense.

Glenn was such a great friend to him. I hope he knows that.

suicide, life, phil
