The Games and music

Thanks to getting a ride from a friend, I got home from Ankkarock last night early enough to watch the opening ceremony - well, mainly the show part of it - of the Athletics World Championships taking place here in Helsinki. I think the whole thing looked good despite the pesky rain, but I do know I'm biased.

I really, really liked the Japanese drummer women - talk about primal (female) power! I'm also pleased that they'd included not one but two metal bands in the music roster - metal is our #1 music import and the genre of music in which we could take on any other country in the world and easily hold our own. My impression of the Nightwish performance is of Emppu and Marco running around, mostly off-camera. There was also the realisation that the one person performing in this apparently-watched-by-millions-around-the-world show I personally know is the person wearing sunglasses in the rain around midnight. Later, one of the Apocalyptica guys did the same, but still, this calls for some gentle bitching, me thinks!

Today there's going to be more Nightwish and Apocalyptica at Ankkarock. I'm looking forward to that - I just hope I'll be awake enough to appreciate it.
