This band called Songs for Moms came through town recently, really fun all-girl punk band from CA, jumped in a car with some folks the next day to see them again in Providence with Tiny Music and Shep & Me. Really happy I got to see Shep, aka Matt Himes, meeting him in person meant a lot, he's a really, really sweet guy. Unfortunately, I think those CA girls brought some sort of West coast virus with them because both Juan Guida and I came down with colds. I've basically just been fighting that the past couple of days, closing in on finishing a strip for the next issue of Kuti and reading a lot. Right now, I'm in the middle of Cormac McCarthy's "the Road", which is fucking terrifying. The movie adaptation is coming out in October, I just watched the preview, it looks a lot like what I've been picturing in my head. I just hope the ending isn't too bleak.

There was also a really interesting essay in Michael Chabon's "Maps and Legends" where he contributes waning comics sales to it's adherence towards appealing to adults as of late, that "children didn't abandon comics, comics abandoned children". I had never thought of it that way, but I guess that's why books like Sonic the Hedgehog, TMNT, and Simpsons comics all appeal to me, they're some of the few new comics for kids that are any good at all. The little Archie books are complete garbage, superhero comics are too violent, I think we may have the answer to why kids gravitate to manga! It's the only thing sophisticated enough for a younger demographic without being condescendingly trashy.

Also, this is mostly for beeblism , who hates Johnny Ryan's work as much as I do. I have to say, Prison Pit looks fucking awesome. I have hated Ryan's humor with a passion for a long time, I have total contempt for anyone's work where their process translates to them sitting down at a desk and thinking, "hmm, what can I make fun of today, and exactly how juvenile can I be about it?". But this book, man, it looks so good!

So yeah, I've had these things to distract me for the time being. White Crime is playing two outdoor festival in Western MA this weekend, sleeping over Sat. night, trying to make necessary preparations. So I'll be busy to put my mind on the bad things this week at least! We'll see what the rest of August holds...
