Batman LIVE! @ The Staples Center - 9/29/12 4pm
The Go-Go's/The Psychedelic Furs/The Motels/Bow Wow Wow @ The Hollywood Bowl - 9/29/12 8pm
BIG DAY
The day started out with Danny dropping off Speck at the vet to get fixed. I was so worried for her. I know this is a routine procedure but our little thing has been through enough already and I don't want anything to break her trust in us. SILLY! I know!
SO! I baked a couple of chickens for the picnic at the Bowl tonight while Danny dropped her off. Danny then went to work after he dropped her off. After I baked I wrapped everything up and got on the train to downtown. On the train Danny called me up saying that it has been a long week and he really just wanted to stay home to take care of Speck. I was sad because I was looking forward to hanging out with Danny but I completely understood. I was also happy that Speck wouldn't be left alone.
OLD FRIENDS AND BATMAN
The Train was late and I met my friends at the Staples Center right as the Batman show started. Now this Batman show as nothing I had any interest in. The only reason I went is because my work needed someone to host the suite for the show. I posted the pictures of the tickets on Instagram because I thought it would be funny. My freeloading ex-drummer and his brother saw it and wanted to go. I said, "SURE" because I haven't seen them in a while. Brownie and his brother Daniel are pains in the asses but I do like them. My friend Frank saw this also and expressed an interest in going to so I also said, "SURE!" I know Frank from high school and we've been in contact for years through Myspace then Facebook but he confirmed my gay speculations when I found him on Scruff! I sent him a message saying, "So how's the whole 'gay' thing treating you?"
Frank's a good guy but we've only seen each other in person maybe a handful of times since high school. The last time I saw him in person was at FYF last year. It was cool hanging out with all of those guys. Frank and Brownie & co. all hit it off so it was a very cool vibe all afternoon.
THE BATMAN SHOW
The Batman show was...whatever. It was just a glorified version of a show you would expect to see at a Six Flags or Universal Studios. I was mostly impressed with the fruit platter in the suite:
THEE SWEETEST AND MOST JUICIEST STRAWBERRIES I'VE TASTED IN A LONG TIME!! The sweetest and most firmest grapes and fucking STARFRUIT!!! I devoured half of the platter!!! We all ate the free food in the suite and gave our running MST3K commentary throughout the show. So all in all it was great hanging out with people I haven't seen in a long time.
We all shot the shit for a few minutes outside the Staple Center before I split for the Hollywood Bowl.
SUDDENLY LAST SUMMER!!!
I rode the RedLine with Frank towards Hollywood. It was really cool catching up with him. We've been in contact through Facebook but actual face to face contact is what really counts for me (with certain people at least!). It's funny. We have a lot of common friends (gay/gay bearo and straight) but we've rarely crossed paths. I got off at Hollywood and Highland and did a quick t shirt change at the station. Bobaloo caught me mid t-shirt change. Freaked me out a little!!
THE CULT OF CELEBRITY
Bob and I walked up to the Bowl from Highland. We stopped at a Subway and two people recognized Bob from his show "The Great Food Truck Race". At first I thought they just friends of his being that Bob is personable and popular guy but NO they recognized him from TV. They wanted a picture with him , an autograph, the works! It was kind of weird!
This would happen a few more times throughout the night!
We met up with my friend Trinity at the Bowl. When we got there Bow Wow Wow were already playing. I was a little bummed that I missed their set but from what I heard outside, from what I saw on the screens outside and judging by the crowd's reaction , they sounded great.
We got in and the place was packed!! People were in our seats when we got there but they moved without incident.
THE MOTELS
OK WOW!! The Motels were the shocker of the night! I can't say I'm a fan. I never owned those albums but WOW! They sounded great! Martha Davis looks like an older Lena Lovich but he voice was amazing and she has an amazing stage presence. They opened with a song I actually love, "Suddenly Last Summer" and did the songs I recognized like "Take the L out of Lover" and of course "Only the Lonely". The highlight of the night was when everyone at the Bowl sang the last "Only the Loneleee-eeeeeeey" That actually gave me chills! Then Martha Davis blew a kiss to the audience.
The PSYCHEDELIC FURS
They were OK. I was pumped to see them because I saw them a few years back at "KROQ's INLAND INVASION" and they were amazing then. Tonight they were good but not WOW!! Probably because I was still so blown away by the Motels.
Set up in between bands was very quick because everyone played on a revolving stage. There was however a 20 minute intermission before The Go-Go's. During this time Me, Bob and Trinity all chatted each other up. I knew Trinity and Bob would hit it off being that they are both very personable people and I honestly believe that neither of them have met a stranger.
GO-GO MUSIC REALLY MAKES US DANCE
The Go-Go's went on and like last year's show at the Greek the show opened with a History of the Go-Go's montage. This show was billed as "Totally 80's at the Bowl" but it was also marked the 30th anniversary of The Go-Go's sold out Hollywood Bowl show during the Vacation tour.
THE GO-GO'S SETLIST
The Go-Go's sounded pretty "eh?" but we all danced and sang along anyway. Belinda's botoxed face did not move all night!!! The setlist was almost identical to last years Greek Theater show as well.
