So, I am considering upgrading my cellphone. I currently have a
Cingular 8525(made by HTC) running Windows Mobile 5. Now, I like open platforms, but considering a variety of reasons, this was one of the most open phones you could get when I bought it around early 2007(MS? Open? Srsly? Yep, pre iPhone dev kits, pre Android, pre
OpenMoko). I bought it for a contracting-gig-gone-wrong, but its a nice phone. But its had some "bumps"(some my fault, many not...), and I'm considering upgrading it because its starting having some flakiness.
iPhone is out. Sorry guys. If I buy an iPhone, it will be much like why I bought my current phone: Commercial plans. I will buy it and a Mac so I can develop iPhone apps.
My surprising "killer feature" is that I can tether this phone to my laptop. This is the killer feature for me. Mobile browsing? Only the bare minimum to check my email. Mobile gaming? Purely to alleviate boredom.
However, Android is appealing to me. Partially because of its JVM oriented nature. Partially because its far more open than the iPhone(including no App store monopoly). And some people say the
HTC Hero is an excellent phone. Now, my current phone is an HTC phone, and I've been happy with its build quality, so I'm very open to buying another smartphone by HTC. It must tether to Windows and Linux though. I admit, if its something like an Android based phone, I will be thinking about developing apps to sell as well, but that's secondary at the end of the day.
Of course, I probably won't be doing this until next year, so it may be moot to ask about this. So thoughts anyone?
