Yes, yes, I know - posting twice in one day. I'm sure the world as we know it will end soon. I've been meaning to do this for a couple of weeks, but I tend to procrastinate almost everything these days. I figured since I had the old keyboard warmed up, I might as well do a few things ( Read more... )

I'm not sure if Martha Wells does fanfic as Martha Wilson or if Martha Wilson writes books as Martha Wells. But the fanfic is at http://www.ltljverse.com/watergate/storyindex.htm. I love the Retrograde stories, but also highly recommend Inescapable, PX7-501, and Typical Day. Language is a bit rough in a couple.

Warning: The Victoria Custer stuff is slash, just so you know.

The main character in the Raksura books is Moon, who is a shape shifter. He has a human (groundling) form and a winged form. His family is killed when he is very young and he doesn't know what he is. He has to hide his winged form or people run him off. He is rescued by an old Raksura (Stone) who reminds me a lot of O'Neill sometimes who takes him to the Indigo Cloud Court of his kind. He had a hard time fitting in, but they jump from one problem to another all through the book. It keeps you hopping. And all along the way Moon finds out more and more about Raksura as well as himself.

Really good, deep characters and wonderful world building. You can go to marthawells.com to see a summary or the books (click on books of Raksura at the top) and if you scroll down there is a good kind of a pre-book story called Forest Boy and some missing scenes (although they may not make complete sense if you haven't read the books, they give you a feel for them).

City of Bones was good as well. Totally different type of world, but the main character here is also kind of an outcast who's had to make his own way. Gets into all kinds of trouble, hard-headed sometimes but protective of his friends, goes places he probably shouldn't. And gets whumped fairly well a couple of times. Yes, I like that even when I'm reading.

I really loved them and I super love some of her fanfiction. The Retrograde series is amazing. Enjoy!!
