Pronunciation and other random thoughts

Ok for those on my Flist that can actually speak German how does one pronounce "ich" and "nicht"?  I mean in the songs they are pronounced ish for "ich" but in the books I've looked up, one tells me this is correct and another tells me it should be pronounced ick. It's kinda driving me a bit nuts. If indeed "ich" can be pronounced both ways, why? Which would be the proper pronunciation for me to learn? Since we're on this topic already what is the difference in use of "mich" and "mir" since I understand they both mean me when would they be used properly or are they interchangeable?  Same question for "dir" and "dich". Doing self study here on the language thing so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Random TH inspired moments courtesy of my children:

Angelica and Stacy were sharing an ipod and listening to a TH playlist. They started semi-humming then when I leaned over to see what song they were listening to, they were like "no, no -wait for the chorus. It's the song everyone knows!"  So I sit back thinking they'll launch into either the German or English version of Monsoon or Scream. Nope they start singing the chorus of "Ich bin nich' ich" LOL

We were at a random family function over the holidays and I caught Stacy going "Was?" to a 5 yr old daughter of a friend. I had to remind her that Lia did not speak German and had no idea what she was saying.

Ever since that French reality TV type thing where Jeremy murdered Monsoon, Stacy has taken to randomly singing Monsoon that way. You know "til the tend of time" and "when I'm lost I sink of you."
