[Note: I posted this right before bed, so forgive me if I messed stuff up. *heh*]
Originally, I was going to go through all of the audition shows (like the first one that I sent out and pick people that I liked, or liked to make fun of :) Obviously, I fell behind with that and it seems a little silly to go back and do it now. I may pick out some here and there that I really wanted to be in the Top 24, but I have plenty of time for that. For right now, I need to start filling your ears with all the crap I think about American Idol when I could be doing something like coming up with a cure for world hunger. Let’s face it - while the latter is more noble, the former is something I can actually do and is a lot more funner. Right? So let’s check out who we’re gonna be seeing sing their heart out for a chance to go on tour over the summer (which I think would be more fun than being the actual Idol - you get to travel around and perform a lot on stage, but you don’t have the pressure of being The One. Or I’m nutty. Anyway.) The people whose names are in red are the people I’m really rooting for to be in the Top 12.
Alaina Alexander
I don’t remember her, which may or may not be a good thing. If she screwed up before, that won’t taint what I think of her - but if she was good, I don’t have any particular allegiance to her, so it might not make a difference.
Amy Krebs
Mmmm…I’ve got nothing on her either, but I was trying to figure out if she was the one girl I wanted to see in the Top 24, so I opened her video. It wasn’t her and she was kind of annoying. So…I might find something to bake while she sings next week *heh*
AJ Tabaldo
He was okay in the clips I saw last night, but I don’t think his vocals are strong enough to compete with some of the others. However, we all have our days and he could be one that proves me wrong once we get to next week.
Blake Lewis
I love this guy. I love the beat box thing he does, and it seriously pulled together the foursome he was in when they were singing “How Deep Is Your Love”. But I’m worried. It’s kind of like the beat box is this overpowering gimmick in my mind and I can’t clearly hear how he sounded just singing. He blended well with the others - I know that. It’s just a matter of him establishing himself solo. I’m looking forward to it!
Antonella Barba
I don’t know. She’s okay, but she wasn’t really anything special. I’m not exactly sure why she got through, especially compared to the other girl she was up against in the end. Maybe there was something else that wasn’t aired, but based on what was, she is really lucky to get this far. I don’t see her in the Top 12 though.
Gina Glocksen
I’m STOKED about her. Not only is she committed to taking this as far as she can (after missing the mark in years prior), she’s also really good. I loved listening to her sing every time she came on the screen. However, every time I cheer on the girls with the different color in their hair (Vanessa Olivarez from S2, Amy Adams from S3 and now Gina) they meet too early a fate. I’m holding out hope!
Brandon Rogers
One of the two backup singers longing to be in the spotlight on their own. I just don’t see him doing it. Personality wise, yeah - I think he could hang with the big boys but vocally I don’t see him standing apart from the others in any significant way.
Chris Richardson
Who? Okay I guess it would be mean to just leave it at that (although I thought about it) so I’ll just say that he’d better have some kind of WOW factor next week.
Haley Scarnato
She’s another one that I don’t recall. I wish they had a clip of one of their song performances up on the site. I could get a little more clarity as to how I feel their chances should line up. I guess we’ll put her in the “we’ll see” column.
Jordin Sparks
YAY! I have this thing where I am completely bowled over by younger peeps that have ass loads of talent - and Jordin is definitely one of them. I remember that she was 16 when she tried out, and that she had just been waiting until she was old enough. I’m looking forward to great things.
Chris Sligh
Funny, funny man - and the good news is that he sings very well to boot. I think that the Top 12 would be less without him. And even though this is not a specific Chris thing, I am loving the fact that more and more “non-Barbies and Kens” are making it through. Bringing people on board because their face/body is marketable torques me off. YAY CHRIS!
Jared Cotter
I got nothing…so again with the “we’ll see” group. I like being surprised.
Lakisha Jones
Will she be this year’s Mandisa or Frenchie? Vocally speaking, she is primed to be. However, will the American viewers learn from their mistakes and vote for her even when they think “Oh she’ll be safe - of course!” I know I will. She’s great!
Leslie Hunt
I haven’t the slightest idea why she made it in to the Top 24. They showed her singing right before she went to sit in the chair and I was like, “What’s so great about that?” Sure - she didn’t make my ears bleed but compared to the people that have been Idols in the past, she’s far from making the cut, methinks.
Nicholas Pedro
I’m glad he got another shot at the top prize, but he’s like the guy above - I don’t know if he can hang in there till the end with his vocals. But there are 6 spots and he could come in just under the wire. I’ll have to look at the whole picture when I’m done.
Paul Kim
I adore this guy. I have to admit that part of the appeal is that he auditioned with “If I Ever Fall In Love” which I just don’t hear on these shows. And that song was my jam when I was younger. He’s smooth, and I can’t wait to hear him wrap his vocals around songs from various genres week after week.
Melinda Doolittle
Yes! This is the background singer that I love. I can’t help it. She’s all quiet and shy and unsure of herself, then she opens her mouth and just lets out this gorgeous voice. And she’s unsure of her talent? Are you kidding me? As much as I love some of the others, I think I would get all warm and fuzzy inside if she took the whole ball of wax.
Nicole Tranquillo
I wasn’t really impressed with what I saw so I’ll reserve my commentary on her as well - at least until I can see what’s she’s got to offer next week.
Phil Stacey
I’m not sure if I like him so much because of his voice or his pretty blue eyes and cute baby daughter…but I think he should have a shot at the Top 12. No - it’s the voice. But he’s so cute! I want to call him George! :)
Rudy Cardenas
Mmmm…I need more from him to decide as well. *tags with a “we’ll see” sticker*
Sabrina Sloan
I think the first time I really remember seeing her was during Hollywood week. She was okay but nothing to write home about. She might be able to change my mind if she gets a couple of things modified control-wise. P.S. I hope that what I’m remembering is actually her or I will feel bad).
Stephanie Edwards
She had a bit of the Diva Effect going on, but now, especially with the success that has found Jennifer Hudson, she is going to have to work really hard to get out of the shadows. Her biggest competition in that genre will be Lakisha and Melinda. Will we have another Fantasia-LaToya-Jennifer fallout? Stay tuned!
Sanjaya Malakar
I have adored him since he and his sister tried out (and I still feel bad about his sister!). I definitely want to see him in the Top…and wouldn’t even mind (at this point) seeing him in the Final 3. Yeah that’s right - I said it. I don’t know if he could do it, but I wouldn’t mind. P.S. He and Amy are both from Federal Way, WA. Wouldn’t it be funny if they were the Final Two? Okay - that’s not happening.
Sundance Head
Here’s the good thing: he has a phenomenal voice, and the kind of personality to make you want him at the top of the heap. Here’s the bad thing: there is something, and I don’t know what it is, that throws him off his game. Normally I would say nerves but he doesn’t seem like the type to be affected. Whatever it is, his group thing during Hollywood week was HORRIBLE. He was all over the place and his attempts to do runs and jazz it up fell flat. So while I want him to blow it out of the water ever single time, he’s gotta get a handle on whatever it is that brings him down. YOU CAN DO IT SUNDANCE!
So if I had to pick the Top 12, it would be:
Girls - Melinda, Gina, Jordan, Lakisha, Sabrina and Stephanie
Guys - Paul, Sanjaya, Sundance, Phil, Chris and Blake
Let’s see how it works out!
