He wasn't aware at the time that in Carrol's Through the Looking Glass, the Walrus was the villain.
Does knowing that rob the song of its power? Does it strip it of its evocative imagery? Did the public at large care? Most people probably knew it was from Carrol, but who knew that it was the enemy? Honestly? In our day and age, who cares who the Walrus was? We only know who the Walrus was when Lennon sang. And even then, the question remained. Anybody could be the Walrus.
Oh wait, I forgot … the Walrus was Paul.
