Sex Vs Gender

This was going to be my response to a post responding to a questions about "the pregnant man" that was news a bit ago. (Why was this such a big deal anyway? If he'd had his parts removed & then managed to have the necessary parts added back in it'd be newsworthy. Or if he'd been born a male (as in genetically with male working parts) & then managed to become pregnant it'd be amazing.) I'd like to hear what my friends may think about how distinct or overlapping sex/gender & "male/female"/"man/woman" are.

"What about the men with female anatomy thing? ... He is a male gender person who still has female reproductive organs." -- person on a forum

I'd argue that her sex is female, but that man is his gender. (The reasons this even caught my attention are my own personal pet peeve at being labeled a "woman", with all its social & behavioral baggage, when I'd prefer the more neutral & clinical "female" & a recent discussion in my Women's Studies course.) This is based on the definitions of
Sex [1] distinguished respectively as female or male especially on the basis of their reproductive organs and structures Gender [2b] the behavioral, cultural, or psychological traits typically associated with one sex
While the given definitions do not explicitly say that gender is man or woman & man & woman are defined as gender, I believe the idea is there, especially when contrasted to the definition of sex. (Yes, this can be argued because definitions vary & change, but there is still a distinction between both even while there is overlap.) We could also discuss the use of pronouns, but I'd accept that he has the right to be called by the pronoun of his choice because he has claimed the identity & traits that define "man". He would not, however be a "male" (going purely by the definition above) until he at least removed the sexual organs that identify him as "female".
