So I've been coughing uncontrollably for like a week now, and throwing up after I eat sometimes, even though my stomach feels fine, just because my coughing is that bad. Normally I can stick like 3 fingers down my throat and still not throw up, so when I do throw up from coughing it's a pretty big deal.
So last night I went to this medical clinic in an ultra-Orthodox (i.e., black hat-donning, Amish looking) section of Bet Shemesh. Until this point I'd only heard very negative things about the Israeli medical system. The doctor told me I needed a chest X-ray, and I was bummed out because that probably meant going to the hospital or something like that. Then the doctor left, and 30 seconds later a Russian guy who barely spoke Hebrew, let alone English, takes me into this back room and gives me a chest X ray in maybe 45 seconds. Then a Russian lady takes me to another back room. She puts a syringe into a little chemical jar, fills it up, then injects it into a medical mask. She puts the mask over my mouth and nose, turns on the machine it's attached to, and walks away. The masks also went over my glasses at the top of my nose, so the chemical was getting in my eyes for the first part and that was kind of painful. Then I fixed that and sat around for 15 minutes waiting for this test to end. They never told me what the test was, why I needed it, or how long it was supposed to last. Then the doctor from the beginning rushes and tells me to takes off my mask. She takes me into the main room, points at my X-ray, and goes "Mazel tov! Yofe! Tov meod!", which means something like "Congratulations, beautiful, great!" Then she starts giving me a diagnosis in rapid Hebrew, then I ask her to repeat it in English, and she says "You have pneumonia!" So she prescribed me antibiotics, which I got from a pharmacy which was conveniently half a block away. Then we (Yali and I) went to Burger Bar, also half a block away, which was fantastic. Despite the fact that it's actual name is Burgers Bar.
Ten months till my birthday!
