What, is there some kind of law of conservation of disks or something? Sigh. I have backups, but, contrary to the usual problem with backups, they're too recent-the disk apparently started going bad at least a couple of weeks ago, and I didn't notice until now (when I noticed that a file had been truncated, the same symptom that afflicted my iMac when it died), and I hadn't gotten around to upgrading my backup scheme to do snapshots. I'm unlikely to have lost anything critical (and I'm not even sure of the extent of the damage yet, though I think I can safely say that the disk needs to be replaced), but it's still going to be a major pain. Argh.
