This is my entry for Word Challenge #3 at the kakasaku lj community.
I'm not sure if I'm going to post it on ff.net, yet, so it's going here for now.
The prompt was "beaches". Restriction 800-1000 words. Constructive criticism welcomed. You actually don't have to be up-to-date with Naruto to follow this.

The dark union of insensate dust. )

The Sandman is a comic book EPIC with over 2,000 pages and I meshed that with all seven books of HP. I thought it would be a bit of fun, perhaps 15 chapters or so. It ended up being 60. *facepalm*
One of the characters is the personification of Dream, and Eliot's line, "I will show you fear in a handful of dust" was too perfect for me not to use at least once. Then I felt like a cheap hack only using that one reference, so I'm throwing a bunch of material in the final chapter to make myself feel better. It's just as well, my head might have exploded if I used too much of it.
I was tired of reading the retellings of canon in which ideas are plentiful but the writers were too scared to take risks and delineate from the books. I'm sure you've probably come across them. I ended up doing all sorts of unconventional things, shape poetry, metafiction and lots of weird foreshadowing. Just because it's fanfiction doesn't mean it can't challenge the mind a bit, something I think you understand.
I'd link you to it, but I'm a bit embarrassed. The first chapter's are pretty rough grammar-wise because I had no idea what I was doing. :D People keep whining to me that I need a beta, and they don't realize that there was no one reading my story at first so I didn't know it was crappy. Grammar wizard, I am not. :(
I was looking The Wasteland last night and I was trying to see what direction you were taking and I'm at a loss. A game of chess? Lou and the dentures? Lots and lots of annotations? ;D
Whatever, you've kind of inspired me. I'm probably going to write something else rooted in literature. Watch out, here comes a KakaSaku inspired by the Sound and the Fury! XD

And yes, I'm ALL for challenging the mind with fanfiction!!!
As for where I'm going with TWS, it's a mix. Generally, I'm lifting the themes and chapter titles/epigraphs from there, but I will take direct inspiration from certain scenes, though they will be no means be exactly as they appear in the poem. I just did my first such scene, actually, based off of the Madame Sorostris section. It was ... interesting, to say the least. When the story is ready for public consumption, I'll be extremely interested to see your take on it, as a lover of both kakasaku and Eliot.
I'm truly honoured to have inspired you. Yay for literature + Naruto! :]
I actually think fanfiction is a great venue for such mixing because you don't have to worry about borrowing v. originality issues and copyrights.

Ha! I'm using the Madame Sorostris section too, only replacing her with Professor Trelawny. LOL

It sounds incredibly lame laid out like that, but hopefully it reads differently, especially with all the other stuff going on with it.
