Flames
Everything was burning.
The fire-the destruction-was far behind Tifa, but she could still feel it. She imagined she could hear screaming, despite the fact that only Barrett had raised his voice. Aeris had tried, but They had cut her off.
Biggs had never raised his voice.
Neither had Wedge.
Tifa wanted to scream.
“Bastards!” Barrett howled, shooting at the sky. The large man with his shining gun-arm seemed grotesque in the abandoned playground. Kneeling in the dirt, Tifa watched him and choked on her sobs.
“They have Aeris!” Tifa whispered hoarsely when Barrett paused to catch his breath. “We have to save her!”
Jessie . .. Biggs . . . Wedge . . .
Cloud.
They were beyond all help now. Aeris had to be all right. She-they-had to be able to save her. There had to be hope.
The flowergirl’s name helped bring Barrett’s attention back to the playground. His dark eyes were still a little wild, but he met Tifa’s gaze and was no longer shouting. Or shooting. Better.
“…She helped Marlene.” Barrett’s face hardened. “She sacrificed herself for Marlene.”
“And we’re going to pay her back for it.” Steel entered Tifa’s voice.
“To the Tower.”

For a moment, silence fell. The whimper faded, drowned by a relieved sigh. The Outside Voice-the Zack Voice-murmured, “Little One?”
And then Mother raged.
And he screamed.
