Always at the right - or wrong - time and place
That fate and Squall were never in good terms with each other he’s well aware of - he’s had more than enough proof of the uncanny tendency of destiny to screw him over to last all generations before and after him. What doesn’t mean he’s ever getting used to being at the worst possible place at the worst possible time.
The headlights flashing his way are the only warning Squall receives, and his jumping out of the way of the buggy is a work of his instincts and little else. He’s still pressed to the wall as the vehicle takes three parking spots and a fiendish Rinoa blasts from the driver’s seat to shove a finger right to Squall’s face.
“Squall! So good to see you here,” she hisses, usually warm eyes reduced to dangerous, glinting slits. Her smile trembles with a spice of mania, which only worsens the effect of oil smudges on her face and clothes, and her hair in complete disarray. “Doing the routine inspection, are you?”
“In fact, yes,” Squall shrugs, pretending to relax for the mere sake of it. Trying to continue as though nothing happened proves to be stupid, however, as Rinoa grabs him by his pendant and pushes him back to the wall.
“Then do me a favor, will you? Do some actual inspection on these bloody cars this time around, ‘cause that hunk of junk over there died on me in the middle of the freaking jungle, and if I hadn’t been on a tour bus that always fell apart with a band before, I would’ve left the stupid thing to the beasts, come back walking, and put the price of my boots on the Garden budget,” she says all in one breath before releasing him and returning to the buggy to collect her things and stomp upstairs without another word.
Squall breathes in, breathes out, and returns to his inspection - any cadet in Balamb Garden would know how to fix a car, but Rinoa isn’t any old cadet. She can tell him off, and he knows thus to be his fate. He's not complaining.
For some unknown reason, inspection takes longer than usual that afternoon.
