I really think that if I could secure the funding for the program, I think it would be a great opportunity to attend the
SetFocus Master's Program C# track. I've been doing a lot of research. No doubt C#, SQL Server, .NET, and a bunch of acronyms like ADO.NET and ASP.NET are hot. I believe that .NET now runs on Linux, certainly C# has been ported there. SO it seems that Microsoft is geting the hint aboot hardware platform independence.
I think computer jobs are EASY to offshore and downsize, because all you really need is a computer and an internet connection. You can hire five Indians in India for the cost of one IBM'er in the states. Software development is much less a hassle than building and investing in a microprocessor fabrication plant.
I'm beginning to think that companies want cheap, fast, robust solutions to their business problems. They don't want to be tied to either UNIX OR Windows or PowerPC or Intel or Sun or HP or a mainframe. Having some arcane piece of knowledge aboot UNIX systems programming isn't going to put food on the table, and not the place to be.
So being in the computer field is becoming a shaky proposition methinks. You need to be able to have a set of skills that people need yesterday. Or you have the be the world's expert in some niche technology, but woe to you when the technology changes.
I also think that with the proliferation of devices like Palm Pilots, Cell phones, etc., applications for these devices MUST BE architecture independent. Software developers will not right to the kernel level anymore, but some virtual machine like Java or .NET provides.
I do not know how much the SetFocus program is. I did get invited to a seminar there this Thursday night in Joysey. SetFocus was the ONLY .NET training site I found omn Microsoft's web pages, so it seems they have a good reputation. They currently have a 94% placement record for students within 3 months after graduation.
I THINK that if I had to leave IBM, part of my severance package is $$$ for retraining.
I'm beginnning to think that maybe leaving IBM would be a good thing. I would be more in control of my destiny. And IBM today changed their compensation package that I think will make people really upset. Current rumor is that they will also requireeveryone to take a 10% paycut, but that is just a rumor.
