The Diabetic Diet

Many people have expressed "condolensces" aboot being diabetic, thinking you have to give up food.

Not so.

I am actually eating better, both healthwise and in terms of taste.

WHen you ween yourself off of the junk and processed foods we are used to, you find that good, healthy foods have so much more intense flavor. I sweated some onions last weeks in just a little butter, lemon juice, lemon zest, and some fresh roasted and ground fennel. I added that to some poached chicken.

YYYYYUUUUMMMMMMMM !!!!

I'll take that over a Big Mac anyday.

I also have to eat kind of constantly. I am always full, and never hungry. I have learned that foods that trigger insulin high production make you hungry, because high insulin levels, well.... make you hungry !!!

When you eat good carbs balanced with protein and unsaturated fats in moderation, you stay full longer, get your nutrients, and just feel better.

I had a slice of bad pizza today at a Chinese Buffet. After all the healthy eating I have done, that pizza just made me realize that I really don't miss it.

Aboot the only things I have to give up are fruit juice, foods that end in "ose", candies, refined carbs, and lots of saturated fats. My glucometer gives me instant feedback on how a certain meal or food affects me, and you learn how to "cheat". I can still have beer, but have that beer with a protein, and the sugar in the beer will be released more slowly than if I just went to a kegger on an empty stomach.

The truth is, the diabetic diet is really the healthy way to live, regardless of whether you are diabetic or not. I really haven't had to give anything up. The only difference between me and a non-diabetic is that I have less slack to work with.

So yay for diabetic diets.
