You've come a long way, baby!

Today is my son's birthday and he is 4 years old today.
It seems like a year ago, he was barely saying 2 words. Not only was he speech-delayed but he also had some developmental problems in other areas as well. Now, after working with him and having him go see specialists and what not, our lil guy is finally saying 3-5 word sentences. He can name colors and identify letters of the alphabet. He can match shapes, point at objects and label them. And as far as signing is concerned, boy can he sign. To parents that have never had a child be delayed in speech, you're probably thinking,..so what? To parents that know exactly what my husband and I are going through because you yourselves may be experiencing the same thing with your child, you know that this is something worth celebrating. It's a major accomplishment. For a long time, I would lay in bed and wonder what did I do wrong? Did I eat something wrong during my pregnancy? Did we not spend enough floor time with him when he was an infant? Did we not read enough or sing enough to him when he was a toddler. Then I think of my first born, and to be honest, we didn't do anything different in raising him as we raised her. She was early in all of her developmental stages. Kids do what they want to do when they decide when they want to do it, not a pediatrician. Something to keep in mind.

My son still has difficulty talking only, but each day he improves. Friends reassure us that before too long, we'll want him to stop talking. You know what? I relish in the day that I can have a normal conversation with my son. I will never *ever* get tired of hearing him talk. That goes for all 3 of my kids.

Anyway, Happy Birthday Cameron. You'll get a lot of pressies today. But most importantly you'll receive a lot of affection and encouragement from a mommy and daddy who love you very much. The fact that you've gone from barely to a lot shows us what a strong little fighter you are.
