Because it is in the middle of the day, the family (which does seem to grow daily, and not in the usual manner) are mostly out and about, on some errands or visiting with friends, or doing whatever it is they do with their infinite time. Lynet doesn't care, they could be off trying to invent a new kind of mousetrap for all she cares. The only thing ( Read more... )

The upside to a person like Gareth in this situation is that he is utterly incapable of entering a house or room unnoticed. His footsteps are loud, and he charges through the front door with an equally loud, 'hallo?'. So Lynet has some forewarning.

Thanks to Gareth's strong resemblance to a juvenile elephant, Lynet has enough time to dry her eyes on the sleeve of her gown and jump up off the bed, pulling the bedding around to pretend that all she's doing in here is making the beds, certainly not crying at all.

"I'm in here," she calls back in a slightly stuffy voice, fluffing a pillow with considerably more force than one might imagine necessary.

"Lady Lynet?" He pokes his head in and greets her with another bright, "Hallo! What're you doing?"

"Making the beds," she says brusquely, keeping her face, which is treacherously red and puffy still, turned away from him.

"Could I help?" he asks, undeterred by her tone. Because if Lynet spoke to him in anything other than a sharp or brusque tone-- well, he'd be worried then. This is normal.

She rubs rather roughly at her eyes, and perhaps that can explain the redness. She finishes smoothing out the blankets before turning to Gareth and saying "You'd only mess it all up. Find another chore. What are you doing here in the middle of the day, besides?"

"What should I be doing? I was wandering about, but then it was hot, so I came back here."

"You should be out being a knight," she retorts, giving the pillow one last, completely unnecessary thump. "Questing or something. Knights shouldn't just give up and go home because it's hot."

"There's nothing to quest for here," he says, sounding a bit put out.

"You could quest for a quest," she suggests dryly (though her cheeks are otherwise - OOH PUN).

"That would be sort of silly."

"Then you'd be just the knight for it."

"I could go on a quest to make you let me help you. Come, I was just a kitchen page, I'm not awful at helping out around the house."

"There's little enough to do!" she protests, but yanks a pillow off the next bed and throws it at him. "Go wash that or something, if you must."

"You're mad at me, I think," Gareth of the amazing intuition says. "What'd I do?"

"Nothing," she mutters angrily, and kicks at the bed. ...an action which she regrets almost immediately. "Dammit! --Nothing."
